Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae: Tiberius, from The Twelve Caesars ca. 1500-1534 Marcantonio Raimondi Italian This print comes from the museums copy of the Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae (The Mirror of Roman Magnificence) The Speculum found its origin in the publishing endeavors of Antonio Salamanca and Antonio Lafreri. During their Roman publishing careers, the two foreign publishers - who worked together between 1553 and 1563 - initiated the production of prints recording art works, architecture and city views related to Antique and Modern Rome. The prints could be bought individually by tourists and collectors, but were also purchased in larger groups which were often bound together in an album. In 1573, Lafreri commissioned a title page for this purpose, which is where the title ‘Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae first appears. Lafreri envisioned an ideal arrangement of the prints in 7 different categories, but during his lifetime, never appears to have offered one standard, bound

Mariae Transtyberim canonicum collectis, c. 1583. Marcus Julius Philippus (204-249), commonly known as Philip the Arab, was born in the Roman province of Arabia, in what is now Syria. He rose to power during the last years of Emperor Gordian III's reign, due to the machinations of his brother, Gaius Julius Priscus, who was an important member of the Praetorian Guard. Gordian III's death in 244 resulted in Philip's accession to the imperial throne.

Gordian I (159-238) was born into a family of Equestrian rank, though there is little else known about his early life. He rose to power late during the reign of Emperor Alexander Severus, eventually becoming governor of the Roman province of Africa in 237. When Alexander was killed and replaced by Maximinus Thrax, many were discontented with his rule, especially the Roman Senate, who viewed Maximinus with severe disdain and did not consider him a true Roman. This discontent eventually resulted in a revolt in Africa in 238. The rioters declared Gordian I the new emperor, who only accepted if his son, Gordian II, was also accepted as co-emperor. The Senate was quick to recognise the Gordians as the true emperors of the Empire, in defiance of Maxminius. Their co-rule only lasted 21 days though, before a legion from the neighbouring province of Numidia invaded the province of Africa and easily defeated the hastily established militia army. Gordian II was killed during the Battle of Carthag

Philip (1177-1208), also known as Philip of Swabia, was the youngest son of Emperor Frederick I and younger brother of Emperor Henry VI. Philip was originally prepared for a life in the clergy, but he forsook his ecclesiastical calling in 1191 after travelling to Italy, and was made Duke of Tuscany in 1195, as well as becoming Duke of Swabia in 1196 after the death of his brother Conrad. He married Princess Irene Angelina, daughter of Byzantine emperor Isaac II Angelos in 1197.
