Date: 1515-ca. 1524.This relief evokes the love between the classical scholar Gaspare Fantuzzi (ca. 1465/70-1536) and his wife Dorotea Castelli, who were both members of patrician families in Bologna and were married in 1502. The inscription on the reverse of the first version of the Eurydice, in which the faithful wife of Orpheus is bitten by a snake (illustrated on the label), reads: "Gaspare Fantuzzi of Bologna dedicates this to the most sweet alliance of marriage and to conjugal love." This work must have been commissioned by Fantuzzi himself to celebrate his marriage. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Adaptation of a Greek statue type of the late5th century B.C.The pose of this statue probably derives from a Classical Greek bronze erected to commemorate the victory of a young athlete. With its sinuous grace, it became an appealing decorative work in this Roman adaptation in marble. All the statues on view in this central courtyard are Roman copies or variations on statue types created some four or five hundred years earlier, during the late Classical or Hellenistic period. While most of the original works were dedications set up in religious sanctuaries, the Roman versions were used primarily to decorate the rooms and gardens of private villas as well as the theaters and public baths that were important features of every Roman city. Date: ca. 1795.The composition, in particular the crossed ankles, derives from ancient Lansdowne Paris type statue, known from Roman copies after mid-fourth-century Greek original, which Dumont would have seen in Rome and Naples during 1788-93. The pose of Dumont's version, however, is much more supple than that of its antique prototype. It was possibly intended as a sketch model for a silversmith. The White Captive 1857-58; carved 1858-59 Erastus Dow Palmer American The White Captive portrays a young woman who has been abducted in her sleep (her nightgown hangs from the tree trunk) and held captive by Native Americans. Bound at the wrists, she clenches her left fist behind her back in defiance. Palmer was commended for his choice of a thoroughly American” subject, which consciously alluded to ongoing frontier skirmishes between Indigenous peoples and white pioneers. In 1859 the marble went on view in New York, and the exhibition, along with that of Frederic Edwin Church’s Heart of the Andes (09.95), emerged as the high point of that autumn’s art season..
