Figures on a Beach, Northern France 1830 Thomas Shotter Boys British Dark rain clouds move swiftly over a beach as figures in local costume approach a sailing vessel. Trained as an engraver, Boys began to use watercolor after meeting Richard Parkes Bonington in Paris in 1823. This coastal subject displays Boys's distinct individual qualities together with a continuing debt to Bonington, two years after the latter's death. Boys was based in England when he painted this work in 1830, but soon would return to Paris and exhibit many watercolors that encouraged new interest in the medium.. The Dock of Deauville, 1891. Eugène Boudin (French, 1824-1898). Oil on wood panel; framed: 80.5 x 116 x 10 cm (31 11/16 x 45 11/16 x 3 15/16 in.); unframed: 46.7 x 37.8 cm (18 3/8 x 14 7/8 in.). This painting treats a common theme in Boudin's mature art, ships at harbor. Boudin typically did not depict the busy commercial life or human tasks related to ships; rather, he seemed always to strive for an overall mood of calm, harmony, and light. Although Boudin's brushwork was quite sketchy at this time, he was still able to suggest the complex sails and structures of large vessels. Here he rubbed light tones around the ships' masts, often overlapping the darker lines of the wood and rigging with white or gray tones as if to evoke the passing wind and shifting positions common to nautical life.

Approaching Storm 1864 France. This painting by EugËne Boudin, a Norman painter and Claude Monetís teacher, exemplifies the artistís signature style and subject matter in the 1860s. Monet would later follow Boudinís practice of painting in the open air, the technique that gave this image of a beach for middle-class vacationers its vivid spontaneity and atmospheric light. This practice would be particularly important for Monet and his contemporaries, who came to be known as the Impressionists.EugËne-Louis Boudin painted many beach scenes at the fashionable tourist spots of Trouville and Deauville in Normandy. In them we see the life of the Paris boulevards translated to the seashore. Bathing attire being still relatively rare, people wore the same clothes at the beach as they did in the city and made the same round of promenades, visits, and dinners. The huts on wheels are portable changing machines that were pulled into the water so that bathers could change without fear of exposure..
