A Man O'War Lying at Anchor early 19th century Johannes Christiaan Schotel Dutch The Dordrecht native Johannes Christiaan Schotel was the Netherlandss preeminent marine painter in the nineteenth century. His clientele included Prince William VI (1772-1843) (the future William I, King of the Netherlands) and various international patrons, including the English diplomat and collector Sir Robert Peel (1788-1850). Schotels work, like that of his close contemporary J.M.W. Turner, reveals an admiration for, and dialogue with, seventeenth-century seascape painting, while often also reflecting recent history. For a contemporary audience, the combination of the anchored man-of-war, blue sky and calm water, and apparently commercial, rather than military, activity of the waterfront in this sheet might have operated as an expression of the peace and prosperity that followed the end of the Napoleonic wars and control of the Netherlands. Dutch Ships in A Calm Sea, Willem van de Velde (II), c. 1665 painting There are six warships on a wide, calm sea. The sails are hoisted, the anchors were lifted. The mirror of the ship on the right in the foreground has been decorated with the Wapen van Amsterdam, stopped by two standing lions. This is probably a part of a war fleet that is getting ready before departure. A sloop with decent figures, probably from the Admiralty, sails under the trumpet and salute shots along the ships, while a little further on the last provisions and crew is still taken on board. The enormous accuracy in the display of details is striking: rigging, sailing and guns. Date: 1865-66.One of the 19th century's great technological achievements was to lay a telegraphic cable beneath the Atlantic, allowing messages to speed back and forth between North America and Europe in minutes, rather than ten or twelve days by steamer. An initially successful attempt in 1858, led by Cyrus W. Field and financed by the Atlantic Telegraph Company, failed after three weeks. Two working cables were finally laid in July and September 1866, the result of repeated efforts by the indefatigable Field, a cadre of engineers, technicians, and sailors, two groups of financial backers, and significant help from the British and United States navies. Dudley documented the process in a series of watercolors and oils, this example showing the Great Eastern launching a buoy to mark the position of the cable

The North Cape by Moonlight 1848 Peder Balke Balke visited the North Cape only once, in 1832, but the experience became a touchstone of his imagination for the rest of his life. The tenebrous palette and expressive brushwork seen in this moonlit view are characteristic of Balkes mature style, which stands in contrast to the more restrained naturalism of his mentor Johan Christian Dahl. When this painting (or another version) was exhibited in Oslo in the fall of 1848, a critic wrote that it "claims our interest, both for the nature of the subject itself and the singularity of the perception of the chosen moment.".
