Royal Air Force Bomber Command, 1942-1945. A 4,000-lb GP Bomb is hoisted from its trolley during operational trials at Marham, Norfolk. It entered general service with Bomber Command squadrons in early 1943, but proved inferior to the 4,000-lb HC Bomb in its blast effect and was withdrawn from service by the end of the year. In the background Vickers Wellingtons of No. 115 Squadron RAF can be seen parked at their dispersals.

This 1901 photo show a nickel steel armor plate ingot cast for the port plate of U.S. battle ship Iowa. Noted on the ingot is its weight: 273,500 lbs. The ingot was manufactured by the Bethlehem Steel Company, which, during WWI and WWII was amajor supplier of armor plate and ordnance. The USS Iowa was launched in 1942 and decommissioned in 1990. It was nicknamed 'The Big Stick' and its motto was 'Our liberties We Prize, Our Rights We Will Maintain.' She was the only ship of her class to serve in the Atlantic Ocean in World War II. She also served in the Pacific in WWII and she served in the Korean War. 20th century.

Newsman Tours Restricted Areas As "Russian Colonel" - Normand (cq) Poirier, a reporter for The Pottstown, Pa., Mercury dressed in a rented Russian colonel's uniform snaps photos of the Pottstown waterworks and a critical bridge during an uninterrupted our of defense areas in this section. The stunt was designed to show that off-limit restrictions placed on Russians traveling in various defense areas was not effective.
