Entrance to the Port of Honfleur 1863-1864 Holland. Along with EugËne-Louis Boudin (see his Approaching Storm), Johan Barthold Jongkind brought a new spirit to the painting of coastal scenes. In content, palette, and technique, the works of these two older artists played an important part in the development of Impressionism. Claude Monet knew Boudin well and adopted him as his mentor, but he claimed that it was Jongkind who ìeducated his eye.î Though they painted their final compositions in the studio, both Boudin and Jongkind strove to retain the freshness of their plein-air (outdoor) sketches.. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1785-1851) was a British Romantic, landscape painter, water colorist, and printmaker. It is said that his style lay the foundation for the movement known as Impressionism. His paintings number in the thousands. Among his best-known works are The Fighting Temeraire, Arth from the Lake of Zug, and Lausanne. This beautiful sea piece, titled A Ship Aground, is essentially Turner, the result of personal observation. It was painted after he had freed himself from the desire to rival and outvie his predecessors, and before he became obssessed by the passion to paint pure sunlight. A Ship Aground is a pendant to his painting The Old Chain Pier, Brighton.

Vikings refer to the Norse, sea-faring natives of lands known today principally as Scandinavia. They were especially known for their shipbuilding and sailing skills. Some were merchants; others explorers; and others, raiders. Vikings raided the coasts of northern and western Europe from the eighth through the tenth century. Their vessels were distinctive, especially their warships with the dragon figurehead at the bow. The theme of this painting, dating to 1916, shows Vikings heading up river in their vessels.

A picturesque charm has long been associated with Giudecca, attracting artists for many centuries--both Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) and Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) painted views of it. However, their images almost always include recognizable landmarks. In his rendering, Sargent avoids identifiable Venetian monuments in recording the characteristics of a typical neighborhood. James Whistler (1834-1903) was an American Painter and etcher. His lawsuit against Ruskin was an example of his efforts to publicize his art. He was influenced by Velasquez and Japanese print artists. Among his best known paintings are Old Battersea Bridge, Portrait of My Mother, The Artist's Studio, and Portrait of Thomas Carlyle. This painting is titled In the Channel and is an impression of grey sea-weather. In it, we have the color equivalent of that expressive economy that Whistler practiced with his line. And we have the butterfly touchlike like a butterlfly alighting.

This is a brilliant impression of Luce's most important color lithograph, which exemplifies the ideas of his close friend and fellow artist Paul Signac (1863-1935): that optical effects of color are achieved by the juxtaposition of touches of pure pigment. In his paintings, Luce used brushstrokes rather than the pointillist dots of color favored by painters such as Georges Seurat (1859-1891). When using lithography Luce placed dashes of different colors side by side so that they would interact, achieving a rich glow of color.
