Io Volcano Culann Patera . What causes the unusual colours surrounding Ios volcanoes Io, the innermost large moon of Jupiter, is known to be the most tumultuous body in the Solar System. Approximately the size of Earths Moon, Io undergoes nearly continuous volcanic eruptions from an interior heated by gravitational tides from Jupiter and Jupiters other large moons. The robot spacecraft Galileo currently orbiting Jupiter has been monitoring the active volcano Culann Patera over the past few years. The above images indicate that the volcano has produced not only red and black collared lava flows, but yellow sulphur patches from explosive plumes. Green colours may arise when these processes affect the same terrain. White patches may be caused, in part, by sulphur dioxide snow. As Galileo has fulfilled its mission objectives and is running low on manoeuvring fuel, NASA plans to crash the spacecraft into Jupiter during 2003.

On Sept. 3, 2010, when the Advanced Space borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) instrument on NASAs Terra spacecraft captured this image strip over the Indus River, Pakistan, severe flooding was still causing a major humanitarian crisis in the country. The city of Hyderabad is near the middle of the image. In this false-colour image, vegetation appears red, water is medium to dark blue and non-vegetated hills are light tan. The ASTER image is located at 25.2 degrees north latitude, 68.4 degrees east longitude. The image covers an area of 60 by 169 kilometres (37 by 118 miles). With its 14 spectral bands from the visible to the thermal infrared wavelength region and its high spatial resolution of 15 to 90 meters (about 50 to 300 feet), ASTER images Earth to map and monitor the changing surface of our planet. ASTER is one of five Earth-observing instruments launched Dec. 18, 1999, on Terra. The instrument was built by Japans Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. A

The data captured here is one of the outputs of a September 2023 test conducted at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory of a state-of-the-art imaging spectrometer instrument, which will measure the greenhouse gases methane and carbon dioxide from space. The instrument successfully detected the presence of methane (dark blue line near the top of the rainbow band), a greenhouse gas, in a sample cylinder. The rainbow band shown on a screen here is a measure of the intensity of a spectrum of light. Blue is low intensity and red is high intensity. Designed and built by JPL, imaging spectrometer will be part of an effort led by the nonprofit Carbon Mapper organization to collect data on greenhouse gas point-source emissions. The information will help locate and quantify super-emitters - the small percentage of individual sources responsible for a significant fraction of methane and carbon dioxide emissions around the world.

This false color image shows part of the floor of Kaiser Crater. Kaiser Crater is 207 km (129 miles) in diameter and is located in Noachis Terra west of Hellas Planitia. This sand dune field is one of several regions of sand dunes located in the southern part of the crater floor. Dark blue in this false color combination are typically basaltic sand. The dunes in this image are moving west - towards the left side of the image. The THEMIS VIS camera contains 5 filters. The data from different filters can be combined in multiple ways to create a false color image. These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image. The THEMIS VIS camera contains 5 filters. The data from different filters can be combined in multiple ways to create a false color image. These false color images may reveal subtle variations of the surface not easily identified in a single band image. Today's false color image shows a small section of Mawrth Vallis (near the top of the image). Of all the channels carved by flowing water on Mars, one of the more unusual is Mawrth Vallis, whose name comes from the Welsh word for Mars. Mawrth winds through northwest Arabia Terra for some 640 kilometers (400 miles) before emptying into Acidalia Planitia on the edge of the vast northern lowlands. Unlike many outflow channels that start in regions of chaotic terrain, Mawrth Vallis just appears and then grows deeper as it heads downstream, holding a width of approximately 15 km (9 mi) until it widens near its mouth at Chryse Planitia. Range 5 million km. This photograph represents much better resolution than ever seen by telescopic means to date. The Red Spot and Ovals both reveal intricate, involved structures, the smallest details of which, are estimated at 95 km. ( 55 miles ) across.
