San Chao Saeng Tham is a Taoist Chinese temple in Phuket's old town in the south of Thailand. Taoism, or Daoism, refers to a variety of related philosophical and religious traditions that have influenced the people of Eastern Asia for more than two millennia. They also notably influenced the Western world, particularly since the 19th century. The word Tao translates as 'path' or 'way'. It carries more abstract, spiritual meanings in folk religion and Chinese philosophy. Taoist propriety and ethics emphasize the Three Jewels of the Tao: compassion, moderation and humility, while Taoist thought generally focuses on nature, the relationship between humanity and the cosmos; health and longevity; and wu wei’ (action through inaction). Wat Phra That Haripunchai was founded in 1044 by King Athitayarat of Haripunchai on the site of Queen Chamathewi's (Chama Thewi or Chamadevi) royal palace. Legend has it that the queen's personal quarters are enclosed in the main 46-metre high Lan Na-style chedi, covered in copper plates and topped by a gold umbrella or plee. Lamphun was the capital of the small but culturally rich Mon Kingdom of Haripunchai from about 750 AD to the time of its conquest by King Mangrai (the founder of Chiang Mai) in 1281.

Vietnam: Thien Hau, Goddess of the Sea, in the main shrine in the Fujian (Phuc Kien) Assembly Hall, Hoi An. Phuc Kien is the Vietnamese for Fujian, and this, the richest of the several Chinese Assembly Halls in Hoi An, was founded by merchants from Fujian Province. It also serves as a temple dedicated to Thien Hau, a goddess who specially cares for seafarers like the Fujian merchants in times past. The historic town of Hoi An is located on the Thu Bon River 30km south of Danang. During the time of the Nguyen Lords (1558 - 1777) and under the first Nguyen Emperors, Hoi An was an important port.
