This drawing, however, is inscribed in the lower left "Siyah Qalam" (literally, Black Pen), linking this tinted drawing to a series of similarly inscribed pieces preserved in albums in Istanbul's Topkapi Palace Library. While these materials require further investigation, signed and dated pieces in the albums fall mostly within the reign of the Aq Quyunlu ruler Sultan Ya'qub (r. 1478-90), who reigned at Tabriz. Bodhisattva Guanyin in the Form of the Buddha Mother dated 1620 Chen Hongshou Chinese In Esoteric Buddhism, the Buddha is understood as having been born of the Law, which is regarded, therefore, as the Buddha Mother. This image depicts the Esoteric manifestation of Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara, in Sanskrit) as the Buddha Mother, a deity with multiple arms and a third "all-seeing" eye. In Chen Hongshou's interpretation, however, the Buddha Mother does not appear as a formidable incarnation of scripture but as a winsome young woman. Her unruly hairdo and the unconventional gesture of clutching strands of hair in her mouth may derive from heroines of contemporary popular theater rather than Buddhist iconography.This large-scale example of Chen Hongshou's early figure style is a rare complement to the small-scale figures in his early album paintings and woodblock prints. Demons and Monsters Takai Kzan Japanese ca. 1870s This bizarre composition, rapidly brushed as if rendered unconsciously, or as if in a trance, captures the appearance of some twenty demons and ghosts in the foreground, with a more conventional scene of a scholar in a hut in the mountains in the background. The artist Takai Kzan revealed that such paintings he created from the 1870s on, were responding to the hallucinations of demons appearing one after another whenever he closed his eyes to rest or sleep. Painted Shroud Fragment 1st century BC-1st century AD Ptolemaic or Roman Period As wife and sister of Osiris, Isis and Nephthys were twinned in funerary beliefs. These heads of the two goddesses, 66.99.140 and 66.99.141, come from a single linen shroud, which probably showed them raising their arms in a gesture of care and reverence on either side of the frontal, mummified image of Osiris. When wrapped about the mummy, the images on the shroud would have identified the deceased with Osiris and placed him or her under the protection of the goddesses. Although they are no longer distinguished from one another by any sufficiently preserved attribute, the two goddesses would have originally worn their different symbols atop the modius on the head.
