A group of Afghan hostages rescued during a Afghan National Army Commando-led raid of a Taliban compound associated with Nangialai Khan enjoy their freedom at a Commando base near the Zer-e koh Valley in Western Afghanistan's Herat province. The Commandos assisted by U.S. Special Operations Forces freed 16 men who were kidnapped by Khan and his men over a four-month period.

The Soviet War in Afghanistan was a nine-year conflict involving the Soviet Union, supporting the Marxist government of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan against the indigenous Afghan Mujahideen and foreign 'Arab-Afghan' volunteers. The mujahideen found other support from a variety of sources including the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, Egypt, China and other nations. The Afghan war became a proxy war in the broader context of the late Cold War. The initial Soviet deployment of the 40th Army in Afghanistan began on December 24, 1979 under Soviet premier Leonid Brezhnev. The final troop withdrawal started on May 15, 1988, and ended on February 15, 1989 under the last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

The reconstruction of the school is only one aspect of the Exercise SHARED ACCORD 2010, which encompasses a broad spectrum of not only the Marine Corps capabilities, but the FADM forces as well. The SA10 task force of more than 700 service members will be working Aug. 3 - 13 to provide humanitarian civic-assistance and engineering projects.

In November 2021, the 409th AEG civil affairs and civil engineers teams restored Daris well pump and refurbished the maternity section of the village clinic, providing a flowing water supply to the villagers, and a more sanitized delivery environment for expectant mothers. The team returned to check on the villagers and see how things were going since the completion of the work.
