A Fort McCoy archaeology team member with the Colorado State Universitys (CSU) Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands who works in partnership with the Fort McCoy Directorate of Public Works Environmental Division Natural Resources Branch (NRB) looks for artifacts during an archaeological survey July 14, 2022, on South Post at Fort McCoy, Wis. For several weeks in July, Fort McCoy archaeological team members with NRB and CSU held a special archaeological survey and dig on South Post. The team did their survey in the South Post Housing Area, which also happens to be the oldest areas of the installations origins where Camp Robinson and Camp Emery-Upton once were located. In the actual location of the survey, however, the team was looking at areas around old concrete tent pads that were once part of Camp Robinson.

The project is to rehabilitate a small village that has been abandoned since the year 2000 into an eco-location. In the process of restoration, this small stone village is moving towards food and energy autonomy and its vegetation is gradually coming back to life. Planting beds being built at the Venice garden on April 16, 2010. The Venice Garden broke ground in April, 2010. Soil tests revealed high levels of arsenic and lead because of previous uses which included a railroad line going through the lot.
