NGC 7380 is the designation for an open cluster discovered by Caroline Herschel, sister of William, in 1787; the emission nebula (red) is Sh2-142. This nebula lies in the constellation Cepheus and is 7000 light years distant. Note the star colors.

NGC 6559 emission and reflection nebulosity in Sagittarius. Within the nebula complex are several bright blue reflection clouds glowing by way of starlight reflected from innumerable microscopic dust particles enveloping the brighter stars. The two brightest reflection clouds are catalogued as NGC 6559 (south) and IC 1274 (north).

A runaway star can be seen in this ultraviolet image from NASA's Galaxy Evolution Explorer. The star, called CW Leo, is hurtling through space at about 204,000 miles per hour, or roughly 265 times the speed of sound on Earth.

At the top of the image the emission nebula of Orion (M42) is reddish due to glowing hydrogen gases and dust lanes, which is several light years across. The blue nebula (NGC 1977) is a reflection nebula, getting its color from close by young stars.
