The major contenders play a game of brag (an early form of poker). Around the table sit six players (left to right): South Carolina senator John Calhoun, Democratic presidential nominee Lewis Cass, Henry Clay, Whig candidate Zachary Taylor, Secretary of State James Buchanan, and President James K. Polk. In the centre of the table is the Presidential Ante. Displaying three aces, former Mexican War general Taylor exclaims, Three bullets, Clay! Still at my old trade! whenever bullets are to be met I am sure to have a hand with them! Clay, who holds three low cards behind his back, replies, I tried my old bluffing game with a contented hand & nothing to brag with but a hand full of hearts! Im not sorry however that old Zach has won! Seated to the left Cass laments, Three braggers, Ca

The Society for the Abolition of the Slave Trade was principally a Quaker society founded in the eighteenth century by Thomas Clarkson. The slave trade had been abolished throughout the British Empire in 1807. In August 1833 the British government passed the Slavery Abolition Act, advocated by William Wilberforce, which abolished slavery in the British Empire from August 1834, when some 800,000 people in the British empire became free. This monumental painting records the 1840 convention of the British and Foreign Anti-Slavery Society which was established to promote worldwide abolition. A frail and elderly Thomas Clarkson addresses a meeting of over 500 delegates.

Stephen finding his mother - Northern Democratic presidential candidate Stephen A. Douglas was widely criticized for his campaign tours of the country--an unusual practice for a presidential nominee. In an attempt to evade such opprobrium Douglas disguised a July 1860 tour of New England and upstate New York as a personal visit to his elderly mother and family. When it took him over a month to go from Washington to New York, Republicans taunted him as "a little boy" (a reference to his shortness of stature) "lost in search of his mother."
