The Crucifixion ca. 1365 Andrea di Cione (Orcagna) Italian The Crucifixion and the six half-length angels mounted within the frame are fragments of an altarpiece; however their current arrangement does not reflect that of the original altarpiece but rather a reconfiguration by a 19th-century collector. The Crucifixion originally formed the altarpiece's central pinnacle while the Six Angels originally comprised pilasters. The altarpiece was probably painted for Santa Maria degli Angeli, the Camaldolese church of Florence, perhaps for the chapel founded in 1365 and dedicated to Ognissanti (All Saints), which was funded by Ser Francesco di Ser Berto degli Albizzi. The altarpiece and its components have been variously attributed to members of the renowned family of Florentine painters: the brothers Andrea (known as Orcagna), Nardo, and Jacopo di Cione. The commission may have been given to Nardo in 1365 and taken over by Jacopo, following Nardo's death in 1366. The Cione brothers, especial

The Crucifixion possibly ca. 1440 Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro) Italian To the left of the Crucifixion are shown Saints Monica, her son Augustine, and Peter Martyr; to the right are Saints Dominic, Francis, and Elizabeth of Hungary. This damaged but poignant picture was painted in the 1440s, when Fra Angelico and his workshop were decorating the convent of San Marco in Florence with a cycle of frescoes financed by Cosimo de'Medici. The picture may well have been painted for Cosimo and is listed in a 1492 inventory of the Medici Palace. As in the San Marco frescoes, saints born hundreds of years after the Crucifixion are shown experiencing the event as an extension of their meditations. The background is regilt.. The Crucifixion. Fra Angelico (Guido di Pietro) (Italian, Vicchio di Mugello ca. 1395-1455 Rome). possibly ca. 1440. Tempera transferred to canvas, laid down on wood, gold ground. Paintings

The Crucifixion ca. 1315-20 Attributed to Ugolino da Siena Italian Famous in Florence as well as Siena, Ugolino was a close follower of Duccio, from whom he derived his remarkable sense of color and use of gesture and expression, creating an effect at once lyrical and tragic. The presence of Saints Francis and Clare indicates that the panel belonged to a Franciscan friar or nun, or possibly to a member of a lay Franciscan group. The gold background has particularly suffered and the head of Christ is a modern reconstruction.. The Crucifixion 440985

The Crucifixion ca. 1495 Gerard David Netherlandish In this poignant image, the Crucifixion is presented as an enactment of the written word due to the inclusion of Saint Jerome. The Church Father is shown as somewhat detached from the event at hand, apparently reading about it from his translation of the Bible. True to the account of the Gospels, David has provided an appropriate sense of time and space. The sky is darkened at the moment of Christ's death on Golgotha (literally, "the place of the skull"), and the holy city of Jerusalem with its prominent Church of the Dome of the Rock forms the backdrop. Leaf from Ms. Ludwig II 7 with The Crucifixion. Mesrop of Khizan, illuminator (Armenian, active 1605 - 1651) 1615 This illuminated leaf depicts the Christian story of Christs Crucifixion. The cross with its wooden grain clearly indicated provides a strong vertical and horizontal component for the composition, which is then visually belied by the off-kilter crossbar above. To Christ's sides, figures with the sponge and lance peep out from behind the more dominant figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John. Crowning the whole and bursting the bounds of the decorative frame is a colorful vision of the pelican feeding her young by piercing her own breast, which serves as a symbol of Christ's self-sacrifice for humanitys sins. The leaf was once part of the illustrated prefatory cycle of a Gospel book that was made in 1615 in Isfahan, Persia, and illustrated by the famous Armenian artist, Mesrop of Khizan, and that now belongs to the Getty. The manuscripts prefatory images were removed over fi

Christ on the Cross with Mary and Saint John, from the Missale Defunctorum, c. 1499, Unknown German, 15th century; Publisher: Johann Winterburger (Vienna), 7 7/8 x 5 7/16 in. (20 x 13.81 cm) (image), Woodcut with hand-coloring and gilt on vellum, Germany, 15th century, Makers of early devotional woodcuts took care to make Christ's blood explicit. Here, the woodcutter incorporated a few long drips into the design (evident under Christ's arms), but depended on a colorist to hand-apply red pigment to complete the composition. Blood spurts realistically from the nail holes, then down the torso and onto the rocks below. The vellum used for this print would have been widely viewed as a metaphor for Christ's flesh.
