The Crucifixion. Artist: Attributed to Ugolino da Siena (Italian, Siena, active by 1317-died 1339/49). Dimensions: Overall, with engaged frame, 25 1/4 x 18 5/8 in. (64.1 x 47.3 cm), painted surface 22 1/4 x 15 3/4 in. (56.5 x 40 cm). Date: ca. 1315-20.Famous in Florence as well as Siena, Ugolino was a close follower of Duccio, from whom he derived his remarkable sense of color and use of gesture and expression, creating an effect at once lyrical and tragic. The presence of Saints Francis and Clare indicates that the panel belonged to a Franciscan friar or nun, or possibly to a member of a lay Franciscan group. The gold background has particularly suffered and the head of Christ is a modern reconstruction. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

The Crucifixion ca. 1330-35 Master of the Codex of Saint George Italian The deep emotional piety shown in these expressive faces and gestures is made more poignant by the weighty drapery folds modeled in sharply contrasting highlights and shadows, by the vivid coloring, and by the taut composition. The unidentified artist has been linked to a miniature painter who illuminated several manuscripts, including a life of Saint George in the Vatican, for cardinal Stefaneschi, resident at the papal court in Avignon from 1309-1341, and a missal, probably for the same patron, in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York. Also in the Museum's collection is a companion panel, The Lamentation. Both were part of a larger ensemble of hinged panels, two others of which are missing and two of which are preserved in Florence.. The Crucifixion 471904

The Crucifixion ca. 1400 Master of the Berswordt Altar German Emotion conveyed through elegantly stylized figures is a trait this Crucifixion shares with other works of the so-called courtly (or International) style that prevailed in Europe in the years around 1400. It is from an imposing altarpiece that included thirty narrative scenes around a central panel of the Madonna and Child. The main panel is still in the Neustädter Marienkirche in Bielefeld, Westphalia. The artist was one of the foremost painters in northwest Germany.. The Crucifixion 436997

The Crucifixion ca. 1325-30 Bernardo Daddi Italian Although damaged in part, this Crucifixion is an important early work attributed to Bernardo Daddi, one of the principal painters of Florence. Dating perhaps to about 1320, it may have formed one wing of a diptych for private devotion. The poses of the two seated figures are based on Roman sculptural prototypes and are particularly beautiful. Their solidly conceived forms and grave expressions are a testament to the example of Giotto.. The Crucifixion 438423
