According to Scandinavian mythology, Frithiof, son of a farmer who is also a great Viking, falls in love with Ingeborg, the daughter of King Bele, who gives Ingeborg to the old King Ring. After many adventures and mishaps, Frithiof finally weds Ingeborg. In this illustration dating to 1908, Frithiof approaches Helge, the brother of Ingeborg, after King Bele's death, and asks for Ingeborg's hand in marriage. He is refused as being unworthy. Frithiof, in a rage, takes his prized sword and cuts the shield of Helge, which is hanging on a tree, in two.

Sitting astride a donkey, Jesus enters Jerusalem during the Passover season in triumph, receiving the acclamation of his followers, who call him the prophet of Nazareth and place garments or other textiles in his path, a homage typically reserved for kings. The multitudes also register their respect with bowed heads, outstretched arms, and clapping hands. Several of his followers celebrate his arrival with palm fronds, a symbol of victory in Jewish tradition. These palms subsequently gave the name to the Sunday that begins Holy Week and leads to the Passion. Shabtai Zevi proclaims himself the Messiah. Sabbatai Zevi,(August 1, 1626 c. September 17, 1676) in Dulcigno (present day Ulcinj), Montenegro) was a Sephardic Rabbi and cabbalist who claimed to be the long-awaited Jewish Messiah. He was the founder of the Jewish Sabbatean movement. At the age of forty, he was forced by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet IV to convert to Islam.

This 1899 illustration shows Pericles addressing the Athenians as depicted by Philipp Foltz (German history painter - died 1877). 'Pericles's Funeral Oration' is a famous speech from Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War. The speech was delivered by Pericles, an eminent Athenian politician, at the end of the first year of the Peloponnesian War as a part of the annual public funeral for the war dead.
