General View of Inner Geumgang mid-19th century Sin Hak-gwon (artist name: Doam) This panoramic landscape of the interior section of Geumgang, or the Diamond Mountains, unfolds from right to left past rocky peaks, rolling hills, streams, and Buddhist temples. In it, forty-six well-known sites are identified by name. Sin Hak-gwons juxtaposition of the tree-covered hills in the foreground—delineated through washes and short strokes—and the jagged peaks in the background deliberately echoes the style of Jeong Seon (1676-1759), a painter renowned for his images of Geumgang whom Sin greatly admired. The double outlines of spindly peaks, which give a slightly blurry impression, however, are Sins trademark. In the inscription, the artist notes that he “copied” a work by Jeong whose condition was deteriorating. Unable to make the pilgrimage to Geumgang himself, Sin used Jeongs compositions, as did Jeongs contemporaries, as substitutes for travel that either fueled or satisfied a longing fo

Eleven-Headed Kannon on Mount Fudaraku 13th century Japan The Eleven-Headed Kannon is worshipped for his ability to provide the faithful with relief from suffering. He is pictured seated atop a high, rocky outcropping dotted with springs and colorful trees in the midst of a vast sea, a setting in keeping with descriptions in Buddhist scripture of Kannons paradisical abode, Fudaraku (Sanskrit: Potalaka). In Japan, several mountainous locales came to be associated with Kannon and his paradise, including Mount Kasuga, in the city of Nara, and Nachi Waterfall, in the Kumano region, sites to which many pilgrims flocked to worship this compassionate deity.. The Naxi or Nakhi are an ethnic group inhabiting the foothills of the Himalayas in the northwestern part of Yunnan Province, as well as the southwestern part of Sichuan Province in China. The Naxi are thought to have come originally from Tibet and, until recently, maintained overland trading links with Lhasa and India. The Naxi form one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China. The Naxi are traditionally followers of the Dongba religion. Through both Han Chinese and Tibetan cultural influences, they adopted Tibetan Buddhism and, to a lesser extent, Taoism, in the 10th century.

This painting, by an unknown Burmese artist, is from a watercolour sketch album dating from c.1897 that includes illustrations of Buddhist monks, the Buddha, monasteries, cremations and domestic scenes. Legend attributes the first Buddhist doctrine in Burma to 228 BCE when Sohn Uttar Sthavira, one of the royal monks to Emperor Ashoka the Great of India, came to the country with other monks and sacred texts. However, the era of Buddhism truly began in the 11th century after King Anawrahta of Pagan (Bagan) was converted to Theravada Buddhism. Today, 89% of the population of Burma is Theravada Buddhist.

White-Robed Kannon 1823 Sakai Hitsu The bodhisattva Kannon (Sanskrit: Avalokiteshvara) sits on a pedestal-like rock, his white-robed figure enveloped in a radiance shaped like the full moon. His skin, his jewelry, and the nearby foliage bear touches of color, but the landscape surrounding him is rendered in monochrome brushwork and ink wash. The iconography and composition follow a model imported from China centuries earlier, established in Japan by Zen monk-painters of the Muromachi period (1392-1573). Above the figure, the words of the “Kannon-gy”—a section of the twenty-fifth chapter of the sacred text Lotus Sutra—are inscribed in gold pigment by the artist.Sakai Hitsu studied the artistic vocabulary of various schools but is best known for his Rinpa compositions, based on literary and seasonal themes and inspired by the work of Ogata Krin (1658-1716). Theatrical jacket with peacock feather design 18th century China This jacket from an ensemble (with 32.63.1) features colorful embroidered peacock feathers. Silk flosses in green, yellow, blue, and orange were painstakingly twisted to mimic the feathers patterns and radiant effects. An exotic bird to the Chinese, the peacock was cherished for its beautiful feathers and is connected with fairies or spirits in Chinese legends. This type of garment is often characterized as an arhat robe (luohanyi), and it is believed that it would have been worn to play the role of a sacred monk in dramas based on Buddhist history. There are many such robes preserved in the Forbidden City in Beijing and elsewhere, and their varied decoration suggests that this form of dress was probably donned by different characters in large-scale court performances.. Scroll of Mudras 11th-12th century Japan This handscroll depicts hand gestures known as mudras in Sanskrit, the Indian language in which many early Esoteric Buddhist texts were written. In Japan, the gestures are called ins, the Japanese term for a Chinese word that combines the characters for "seal" and "form." In Esoteric Buddhism, mudras are physical enactments of ultimate truths revealed through the buddhas and other deities. Practitioners of Esoteric Buddhism in Japan form mudras during meditation and rituals and use them to interpret the meaning of painted and sculpted Buddhist images.
