Standing attendant 7th century China This standing attendant is likely a rare representation of a non-Han Chinese figure from the north, as suggested by his plump face with narrowed eyes, his long hair in double braids, and his costume of a tunic with wide lapels, loose trousers, and pointed boots. His belt, from which a triangular pouch, a knife, and a circular box are suspended, also reflects the nomadic way of life. Fernao Mendes Pinto (c.1509 - 8 July 1583) was a Portuguese explorer and writer. His exploits are known through the posthumous publication of his memoir Pilgrimage (Portuguese: Peregrinacao) in 1614, an autobiographical work the accuracy of which has sometimes been called into question. In the course of his travels in the Middle and Far East, Pinto visited Ethiopia, the Arabian Sea, China, India, Burma, Siam and Japan. He claimed to have been among the first group of Europeans to visit Japan and initiate the Nanban trade period.

Known also as the Thunderbolt Deity, this fierce protector of the Law of Buddhism brandishes a vajra that symbolizes the power of wisdom to penetrate ignorance and destroy evil. Shukongo-jin belongs to the same category of gods as the paired guardians (nio) often placed on either side of the gateways to Buddhist temples.Because Shukongo-jin was not intended to blend into a sculptural ensemble, artists frequently used the opportunity to portray him as an occasion for eccentric and exaggerated effects. This figure, for example, is comparatively small, but it still conveys the threat of explosive force appropriate to the deityís role. He stands surrounded by churning waves, while a divine wind blows his garments about and fuels the flames that are his hair. Date: ca. 1885.Model totem poles began to be carved in the Pacific Northwest in the mid-1860s, when full-sized totem poles were no longer being worked. Both wood and argillite, a black shale, were used for the model carvings, the bulk of which were made for sale to outsiders. The Native population had been decimated by smallpox earlier in the decade, and the continuance of full-scale local traditions was not possible in the aftermath. The imagery of the model poles-often similar to that of full-scale poles without directly reproducing it-is credited with providing a vehicle through which many artistic conventions were continued into the next generation. By the 1880s, the identity and artistic personality of individual carvers began to surface. Male figure ca. 18th century B.C. Babylonian This kneeling male figure would have originally been part of a larger openwork composition. Openwork bronzes are known from the early second millennium B.C. in a variety of forms, but their function in antiquity is not fully understood. Slots and circular openings in the plaques suggest their use with cords, straps, or fabric. The kneeling male seen here - in a belted skirt and clean-shaven - appears on many of the plaques and would have been one of a pair, symmetrically arranged. Clean-shaven individuals in Mesopotamian art are often associated with the temple, where their lack of hair may have been a marker of purity and cleanliness.. Male figure.
