Dressed in brocade and ostrich feathers, she sounds a trumpet, heralding the appearance of four famous men: two philosophers, Plato and Aristotle, and two rulers, Alexander the Great, on the far side, and Charlemagne. Alexander bears the golden scepter topped with a hand and other emblems of the kings of France; Charlemagne wears the crown of the Holy Roman Emperor but also the fleur-de-lys of France. Female figures symbolizing Death are trampled underfoot.The theme derives from The Triumphs (I Trionfi), by the fourteenth-century Italian poet Petrarch. By about 1500, it had been translated into French for King Louis XII and illustrated on royal tapestries. Empress Gensho (683-748), 44th imperial ruler of Japan. The daughter of Empress Gemmei, Gensho's reign spanned the years 715 through to 724. Under her reign, the Nihonshoki, the first Japanese history book, was completed in 720. Organisation of the law system was continued, and the taxation system, which had been introduced by Empress Jito in the late 7th century, was reformed to promote agricultural production. Gensho also encouraged the arts, letters and science, continuing the works of her mother. When her nephew reached the age of 25 she abdicated.

Shadow play (Chinese: 影戏, pí yĭng xì) or shadow puppetry is an ancient form of storytelling and entertainment using opaque, often articulated figures in front of an illuminated backdrop to create the illusion of moving images. It is popular in various cultures. At present, more than 20 countries are known to have shadow show troupes. Shadow puppetry originated during the Han Dynasty when one of the concubines of Emperor Wu of Han died from an illness. The emperor was devastated, and he summoned his court officers to bring his beloved back to life. The officers made a shape of the concubine using donkey leather. Her joints were animated using 11 separate pieces of the leather, and adorned with painted clothes. Using an oil lamp they made her shadow move, bringing her back to life. Shadow theatre became quite popular as early as the Song Dynasty when holidays were marked by the presentation of many shadow plays. During the Ming Dynasty there were 40 to 50 shadow show troupes in the city

Gayumarth (sometimes Gayumars), first Shah of Iran, is enthroned among his courtiers clad in leopard skins at the opening of the Shahnama-yi Shahi (The King's Book of Kings). This miniature was probably painted by the court painter Sultan Mohammed, and is considered by some to be the most beautiful image in all Persian art. The picture was painted at the request of Shah Tahmasp. The work was presented by the Safavid ruler to the Ottoman sultan Selim II in 1568.
