Legend attributes the first Buddhist doctrine in Burma to 228 BCE when Sohn Uttar Sthavira, one of the royal monks to Emperor Ashoka the Great of India, came to the country with other monks and sacred texts. However, the era of Buddhism truly began in the 11th century after King Anawrahta of Pagan (Bagan) was converted to Theravada Buddhism. Today, 89% of the population of Burma is Theravada Buddhist.

Islam was introduced to Yunnan in 1253 when Kublai Khan, the fifth emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, pacified Dali. In 1273, Sayyid All Omer Shams al-Din was appointed Prime Minister (now called governor) of Yunnan. During his reign, he established 12 mosques in Kunming. Islam has since spread all over Yunnan Province, mainly in Kunming, Yuxi, Honghe, Wenshan, Dali, Baoshan, Zhaotong, Chuxiong, Simao, and Qujing prefectures and municipalities. Many ethnic Hui, some Dais, Bais, Tibetans and Zhuangs have converted to Islam. There were an estimated 500,000 Muslims in Yunnan in May 1996, and some 717 mosques in service.

1920S 1930S Interior Scene In The Cave Of The Thousand 1000 Buddhas Hangchow China Buddhist Religion

In the early 1900s, a Chinese Taoist named Wang Yuanlu appointed himself guardian of some of these temples. Wang discovered a walled up area behind one side of a corridor leading to a main cave. Behind the wall was a small cave stuffed with an enormous hoard of manuscripts dating from 406 to 1002 CE. These included old hemp paper scrolls in Chinese and many other languages, paintings on hemp, silk or paper, numerous damaged figurines of Buddhas, and other Buddhist paraphernalia. The subject matter in the scrolls covers diverse material. Along with the expected Buddhist canonical works are original commentaries, apocryphal works, workbooks, books of prayers, Confucian works, Taoist works, Nestorian Christian works, works from the Chinese government, administrative documents, anthologies, glossaries, dictionaries, and calligraphic exercises. Wang sold the majority of them to Aurel Stein in 1907.

Some Sevillanas of the time Lamented the Loss: "May cross of Seville / tradition that time has Broken / Where are the Sevillanas / that were sung in chorus" The Crosses of May have been recovered in recent years, but without having the roots they should have. A traditional Burmese orchestra, or 'saingwaing', is composed of wind instruments, Burmese trumpets ('ne'), brass gongs ('mow') and the large barrels or drum circles also known as 'saingwaing' which are lined with hanging tambourines. Troupes are still popular today at Buddhist festivals and national events.

The musicians shown here are all college students. The instruments in the back row are all Gayageum : a plucked zither with 12 strings, though some more recent variants have 18, 21 or 25 strings. It is probably the best known traditional Korean musical instrument. The front row, from left to right, we see a Janggu (drum), Geomungo (plucked zither with both bridges and frets, made in Goguryeo before the 5th century AD) and an A-jaeng (string, plays the bass part in ensemble music). In the middle, she is playing a Haegeum (string).

The Siamese were avid theatre-goers at the turn of the 20th century. Mime, dance, plays and shadow puppetry were all very popular. Many of the stage plays involved dancers, mostly female, who adorned themselves in jewellery and exhibited lithe movements portraying beauty and flexibility, especially in bending the fingers back. The most common plays were called 'khon', which essentially feature scenes from the 'Ramakien', the Thai version of the Hindu epic 'The Ramayana'.

In 1966, treasures inside of the tower were discovered: precious reliquaries, sariras, and the oldest extant example of printed material from a wood block in the world (The Great Dharani Sutra). Yeondeunghoe is a lantern-lighting festival in Korea celebrating the Buddha's Birthday. It is inscribed in UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List from 2020 and enlisted as South Korean Intangible Cultural Property from 2012. To celebrate Buddha's birthday on April 8th by the lunar calendar, various kinds of colored lamps hanging up on many ropes are lighted at night, a spectacle to enjoy from the vantage point of a hill.

The word Nautch is an anglicized version of nac, a word found in Hindi and Urdu and several other languages of North India, derived from the Sanskrit, Nritya, via the Prakrit, Nachcha. A simple and literal translation of Nautch is 'dance' or 'dancing'. The culture of the performing art of Nautch rose to prominence during the later period of Mughal Empire, and the East India Company Rule. Over a period of time, the Nautch traveled outside the confines of the Imperial courts of the Mughals, the palaces of the Nawabs and the Princely states, and the higher echelons of the officials of the British Raj, to the places of smaller Zamindars, and other places. Some references use the terms Nautch and Nautch girls to describe Devadasis who used to perform Hindu ritual and religious dances in the Hindu temples of India. However, there is not much commonality between the Devadasis and the Nautch girls. The former performed dances in the precincts of the Hindu temples to please the temple deities,

Phuc Kien is the Vietnamese for Fujian, and this, the richest of the several Chinese Assembly Halls in Hoi An, was founded by merchants from Fujian Province. It also serves as a temple dedicated to Thien Hau, a goddess who specially cares for seafarers like the Fujian merchants in times past. The small temple complex is set back from the street beyond a courtyard. Here the Sea Goddess Thien Hau presides at the centre of the main altar in the first chamber. Her attendants on either side inform her whenever there is a shipwreck, so that she can intercede on the part of the mariners. To the right of the altar is a large model of a Chinese sailing junk. In the chamber at the back, another altar honours six seated figures representing the founding fathers of Hoi Ans Fujian community, who fled to Vietnam after the overthrow of the Ming Dynasty in 1644. Coronation Of The Rajah Of Gowa -- On 25th April, 1947, the coronation of Padoeka Toan Andi Isjo Karaeng Ialolang (Sultan Mohamad Andulkadir Aidid) as the Rajan of Gowa took place amongst those present at the ceremony were the president, Tjokorde Rake Gede Soekawati and his wife, the commissioner of the Crown, Dr. M. Brouwer, all the Ministers of East-Indonesia, Vice-Admiral A.S. Pinke, all navel and army authorities, and officials of the civilian service. Also all the Monarchs of the South Celebes attended, dressed in their official robes. Ten thousand were assembled around the investiture stones, and around which stones a bamboo house with a palm leaf roof had been built. The investiture and was performed by three members of the Self-Government of Gowa. June 04, 1947.
