Perhaps due to misunderstandings by early Western scholars attempting to understand Tibetan Buddhism, the term 'Lama' has historically been erroneously applied to Tibetan monks generally. Similarly, Tibetan Buddhism was referred to as 'Lamaism' by early Western academics and travelers who did not understand that what they were witnessing was a form of Buddhism; they may also have been unaware of the distinction between Tibetan Buddhism and Bon. The term 'Lamaism' is now considered derogatory.

Pastor Grieve and one of the Tari wigmen. The ancient sign of devil worship an inverted crossed Vee flanked by two smaller inverted Vees dating back to the days of Babylon has been found among the bewigged mountain tribesmen inhabiting New Guinea's 5000ft high Tari Valley. Tari is only a day's journey from the renowned Shangrila valley of Lavani, now being explored by Australian patrolmen. Seventh Day Adventist missionary Pastor Louis Greive who flew into Sydney last week after two months in the Tani Valley told me that devil-worship or the appeasement of evil spirits is widespread in New Guinea. Palestine is a name given to the geographic region between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. The region is also known as the Land of Israel, the Holy Land and the Southern Levant. In 1832 Palestine was conquered by Muhammad Ali's Egypt, but in 1840 Britain intervened and returned control of the Levant to the Ottomans in return for further capitulations. The end of the 19th century saw the beginning of Zionist immigration and the Revival of the Hebrew language. The movement was publicly supported by Great Britain during World War I with the Balfour Declaration of 1917. The British captured Jerusalem a month later, and were formally awarded a mandate in 1922. In 1947, following World War II and the Holocaust, the British Government announced their desire to terminate the Mandate, and the United Nations General Assembly voted to partition the territory into a Jewish state and an Arab state. The Jewish leadership accepted the proposal but the Arab Higher Committee rejected it; a

The Communist Party of Burma (Burmese: ; CPB) is the oldest existing political party in Burma. The party is unrecognised by the Burmese authorities, rendering it illegal; so it operates in a clandestine manner, often associating with insurgent armies along the border of People's Republic of China. It is often referred to as the Burma Communist Party (BCP) by both the Burmese government and the foreign media. The Lahu (Ladhulsi or Kawzhawd; La H) are an ethnic group of Southeast Asia and China. They are one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by the People's Republic of China, where about 450,000 live in Yunnan province. An estimated 150,000 live in Burma. Thot Kathin is an important annual ceremony for Buddhists in Thailand and neighbouring countries. It takes place at the end of the monsoon season when monks are free to leave their monasteries and wander or go on pilgrimage. At this time, local devotees offer new robes and other essentials to the monks. Sponsoring a Kathin ceremony is considered a noble way of making merit in Thai society. Traditionally, the King of Thailand makes a donation to the monks at the temple of Wat Arun in Bangkok and travels down the Chao Phraya River in his royal barge to attend the ceremony.

Sri Lankan Tamils or Ceylon Tamils, are a section of Tamil people native to the South Asia island state of Sri Lanka. According to anthropological evidence, Sri Lankan Tamils have lived on the island around the 2nd century BCE. Most modern Sri Lankan Tamils claim descent from residents of Jaffna Kingdom, a former kingdom in the north of the island and Vannimai chieftaincies from the east. They constitute a majority in the Northern Province, live in significant numbers in the Eastern Province, and are in the minority throughout the rest of the country. Sri Lankan Tamils are culturally and linguistically distinct from the other two Tamil-speaking minorities in Sri Lanka, the Indian Tamils and the Moors. The Sri Lankan Tamils are mostly Hindus with a significant Christian population.

Tonkin is the northernmost part of Vietnam, south of China's Yunnan and Guangxi Provinces, east of northern Laos, and west of the Gulf of Tonkin. Locally, it is known as Bac Ky, meaning 'Northern Region'. Located on the fertile delta of the Red River, Tonkin is rich in rice production. Its capital was Ha Noi, or Hanoi, which is now capital of unified Vietnam After the Viet Minh army defeated the French at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (in Western Tonkin) in 1954, the republic transformed into what became known as North Vietnam, consisting of Tonkin and North-central Vietnam.

Wat Phra That Haripunchai was founded in 1044 by King Athitayarat of Haripunchai on the site of Queen Chamathewi's (Chama Thewi or Chamadevi) royal palace. Legend has it that the queen's personal quarters are enclosed in the main 46-metre high Lan Na-style chedi, covered in copper plates and topped by a gold umbrella or plee. Lamphun was the capital of the small but culturally rich Mon Kingdom of Haripunchai from about 750 CE to the time of its conquest by King Mangrai (the founder of Chiang Mai) in 1281.
