Studio Portrait: Indigenous Man Seated Holding Bow 1860s-70s Unknown The carte de visite, a format comprised of an approximately 2 x 4 inch photograph mounted to card stock, was perhaps the most ubiquitous of nineteenth-century photographs. The French studio portrait photographer André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri?first patented the carte in 1854. His innovation of exposing not just one but eight photographic images on the same glass plate negative enabled cartes to be made cheaply and reproduced on a mass scale. During the late 1850s and throughout the latter half of the century, these economical keepsakes depicting portraits of loved ones, celebrities, monarchs, and foreign types circulated en masse and spurred a veritable "cartomania." Collected in albums, traded among friends, and admired in drawing rooms, cartes put photography in the hands of virtually everyone, and thus offered a means of reflecting upon one’s own social standing in an ever-expanding world.. Sinchi Roca, Second Inca, 1 of 14 Portraits of Inca Kings Unknown. Sinchi Roca, Second Inca, 1 of 14 Portraits of Inca Kings, mid-18th century (probably). Oil on canvas, 23 5/8 x 21 11/16in. (60 x 55.1cm). The blue background of these twelve portraits of Inca kings could have been produced with a variety of pigments that were available in the Viceroyalty of Peru in the eighteenth century: Prussian blue, from Germany; indigo, from the Americas; and smalt, imported from Europe. In the Viceroyalty of Peru, the choice of a blue back-ground for these portraits was strategic, elevating the subjects as blue did in European paintings of rulers and nobles. Following the European tradition, Cuzcos surviving Inca aristocracy likely commissioned these portraits to document their royal heritage and thus legitimize their political and social authority. Bashi-Bazouk 1868-69 Jean-Léon Gérôme French This arresting picture was made after Gérôme returned to Paris from a twelve-week journey to the Near East in early 1868. He was at the height of his career when he dressed a model in his studio with textiles he had acquired during the expedition. The artists Turkish title for this picture—which translates as "headless"—evokes the unpaid irregular soldiers who fought ferociously for plunder under Ottoman leadership, although it is difficult to imagine this man charging into battle wearing such an exquisite silk tunic. Gérômes virtuosic treatment of textures provides a sumptuous counterpoint to the figures dignified bearing. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #6013. Menelek Made 1896-1902 United States. F. Holland Day played a key role in the international Pictorialist movement that gained strength around 1900. Pictorialists believed that photography could be a vehicle for personal expression. They employed soft focus, borrowed compositions from paintings, and presented their work as fine artófor example, surrounding the image with one or more layers of tinted paper. Day, a flamboyant presence, dressed his frequent model J. Alexandre Skeete in elaborate costumes for a series of photographs evoking imaginary African royalty the title of this work references the 10th-century BC Ethiopian king Menelek and Ethiopiaís 1896 independence from Italy under Menelek II. This series furthered a long, con-troversial tradition of white artists exoticizing, and also eroticizing, people of color as ìother.îFor more on the Alfred Stieglitz collection at the Art Institute, along with in-depth object information, please visit the website The Alfred Stieglitz Collect
