Coast Guard Match Box Fleet. The doughty fleet of Coast Guard 83-footers ply the rough waters of the English Channel off the coast of France. This Coast Guard rescue flotilla performed valiant service, saving almost 1500 men from the water on D-Day and the succeeding days.

Surf whipped the barge around, but it did not tip. Handling invasion barges in strange waters requires veteran seamanship.

Nazi Pillbox, Now Harmless, in Path of Riviera Invaders. Abandoned in a hurry by dismayed Nazis, this pillbox stands on the beach of the Riviera, over which American reinforcements and supplies pour in for new crushing blows against the enemy. Coast Guard-manned invasion transports, in the distance, are unloading materiel just as they unloaded the first waves on D-Day.

Through Fire and Water to Luzon. Through Fire and Water to Luzon. From Coast Guard-manned landing barges, the invaders of Luzon struggle through a deep-crashing surf to hit the beaches of Lingayen Gulf on Jan. 9, 1945. One barge became snagged on a sand bar and assault troops, struggling shoreward through deep water, encountered difficulty with the treacherous currents. Some were drowned; other died from Jap fire rattling out from the underbrush.

Churning Waters Spell Trouble (4 of 7 ). The NORTHWIND's LCVP runs into trouble while trying to land on the narrow, rocky beach at Cape Hinchinbrook Light Station with a full load of 2,000 feet of fueling hose and station supplies. At the instant the bow ramp was dropped, a wave broached the LCVP knocking her almost broadside on the beach. It will take a lot of quick handling to unload her now.

Bering Sea Patrol - Coast Guard Cutter KLAMATH (2 of 10). Eskimos of Shiamarof Shishmaref, Alaska, near the Arctic Circle, arrive in an oomiak to keep an appointment with the dentist on board the Coast Guard Cutter KLAMATH. Before receiving treatment, these Eskimos were first examined with others at the village by Lieutenant Fred Abramson, Public Health Service dentist assigned to the cutter. (The oomiak, as seen here, carries quite a number of persons. U.S. Coast Guard men who have ridden in the oomiak agree that "It is like walking a swaying tight rope in a wind." Notice the outboard motor.) This was the KLAMATH's first assignment to the annual Bering Sea Patrol. One of the cutter's many duties on the four-month cruise, just recently completed, was to help the Territorial Department of Health and the Alaska Native Service in carrying dental and medical aid to Alaska native in remote areas.

Coast Guards Roving Rescuers Cheat Death in Channel. Crashed Mosquito bomber is sighted-- in the gray damp of early morning, Coast Guard Rescue Cutter 15, on patrol off Cherbourg Peninsula, receives word that an Allied plane is down in the Channel. Fifty minutes later, the Coast Guardsmen spot a red flare and sight the floating wreckage of a Mosquito bomber. Quickly two British fliers are hauled to safety from their tossing "doughnut" life raft-- two more to the mounting record of more than 1,100 lives saved by the Coast Guard's rescue flotilla of doughty 83-footers on and since D-Day.

Photograph of Coast Guardsmen Looking Over a Wrecked Japanese Landing Barge. Jap Landing Barge Shelled to Ruin. Coast Guard coxswains and boat crews who landed the invaders of the Marshall islands look over a wrecked Jap landing barge which was tied up to the pier during the terrific pre-invasion shelling of the Ebeye Island seaplane base. The Coast Guardsmen agreed that American landing craft are sturdier and swifter than the Japanese product.

Cadet Cruise 1948 - A Race with Death. In a transfer described by veteran Coast Guardsmen as "daring" Dick Roth, 21 of Dell Rapids, South Dakota, stricken with appendicitis while serving as radioman aboard the Coast Guard training ship EAGLE, was removed by small boat to the USCGC CAMPBELL. The speedy CAMPBELL rushed young Roth to the Bermuda hospital, 500 miles away, where an immediate operation was performed. Attending physicians reported his condition as "good". Coast Guardsman Roth is the son of Mrs. Miranda C. Roth of 409 - 7th Street, Dell Rapids, South Dakota. Both the EAGLE, young Roth's ship, and the CAMPBELL, normally based at Staten Island, New York, are making the U.S. Coast Guard Academy cadet training cruise to European ports.

Time Out from War. Even fighting men don't fight all the time, as shown by this picture of U.S. Coast Guardsmen going for a swim in the South Pacific. Grim reminder of the Coast Guard's role in invasions is the landing barge in the background. Coast Guardsmen have participated in the invasions of the Solomons, North Africa, Aleutians, and Sicily.

Coast Guardsmen Learn to Swim for Lives. Blazing oil slicks, dread peril to the life of seamen swimming from sinking ships, can be beaten, Coast Guardsmen are taught in a functional swimming course at Miami, Florida. As demonstrated by Coast Guardsmen Van Reed Gaenzle of Reading, Penn., foreground, and Edgar Harrison, Miami, the method is to use the breast stroke with the hands pushing a fan of water to front and sides during the recovery portion of the stroke.

Puzzle: Find the Cutter. Some idea of the size of this berg is gained by noting the 240 foot Cutter Mojave which is cruising just beyond it. The accompany B-24 plane, which in the Spring of 1946 began the aerial phase of the Coast Guard's International Patrol work is checking data with the Cutter, with a view to accuracy in the information which will eventually be forwarded to vessels in the ice-affected areas.

Blasted from the sky, two Japanese airplanes give up the black smoke of their death agonies in the midst of the American invasion fleet which they attacked off Okinawa. The enemy air attacks, coming with fanatical fury a few days after the Okinawa beachhead was secured, cost the Japs many airplanes as Coast Guard-manned and Navy ships filled the sky with bursting metal from anti-aircraft guns.

Coast Guardsman Aboard a Sub-buster Blinks a Message to Another Coast Guard Vessel. Coast Guard Blinker. Somewhere at sea.. A Coast Guardsman aboard a Coast Guard sub-buster blinks a message to another Coast Guard vessel while patrolling the sea lanes in the search for enemy undersea raiders. Blinker light and semaphore signalling are used extensively in preference to radio because of the danger of enemy ships detecting the radio sound waves. The powerful blinker lights are easily seen during the daylight hours as well as the night.

Kamikaze Pilot Scores Hit. Black smoke belches forth and fire lights the dark sky off Okinawa for a Coast Guard combat photographer as a Jap kamikaze plane, manned by a suicide pilot, finds a mark among the fleet anchored off the Ryukyu Island. Although the suicide pilots have been active in the area, they have taken a small, if costly, toll of American shipping and lives. Anti-aircraft fire has been most effective and damage control parties aboard the stricken vessels have been instrumental in saving most of the ships which have fallen victim to the enemy.

Coast Guard Icebreakers Aid Navy Task Group in Arctic Mission. U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eastwind finds the ice of Baffin Bay a formidable foe and her helicopter takes off to scout the area so that a course can be chosen that will make passage less difficult. Long range ice reconnaissance for the Navy Task Group on this Arctic Mission was provided by two Royal Canadian Air Force planes. Short range scouting was done by helicopters from the Coast Guard and Navy icebreakers participating in the operations.

Coast Guardsmen Link Rails in England and France. A Coast Guard-manned LST noses its open steel jaws into a connection with a land track on the coast of France. Rail cars ferried from England on the vessel's track-lines tank deck will soon roll onto shore, ready for use on the Army Transportation Corps' vast rail network supplying Allied armies on the western front.

Photograph of a Monument to a Dead American Soldier Somewhere on the Shell Blasted Shore of Normandy. "Ours Not To Reason Why --". The beachhead is secure, but the price was high. A Coast Guard Combat Photographer came upon this monument to a dead American soldier somewhere on the shell blasted shore of Normandy. Comrades had used fighting equipment of the killed invaders to erect the monument in his honor before they pressed inland on the heels of Nazis retreating before the irresistible force of the D Day assault upon Hitler's Atlantic Wall.

La Redoute des Haute Brugeres, Siege of Paris by Paul Roux, 1870-1871. After the disastrous defeat of the French at Sedan and the capture of Napoleon III, the Prussians surrounded Paris on 9 September 1870. The French commander, General Trochu, initially opted to rely on a static defence based on the city's fortifications rather than trying to break through the Prussian encirclement. The Prussians, meanwhile, had no intention of invading the city, relying on a blockade to compel its capitulation. Eventually the French made several attempts to break out, but all were unsuccessful. The city held out despite famine and great hardship until a bombardment with heavy siege guns led to its surrender on 28 January 1871. From a private collection.

Cleanup Hour in Ie Shima Refugee Camp. Inhabitants of Ie Shima are escorted daily to the beach to wash out their clothes and bathe. These civilians are kept under guard of American forces in a refugee camp. Ie Shima, an important island close to Okinawa, fell to an American amphibious force of soldiers, Coast Guardsmen and Navy men during the thrust into the Ryukyus.

McClure Strait and CGC Northwind. 13 August 1954 - The USCGC Northwind breaks the west-to-east entrance to previously impassable McClure Strait, the ice-locked western entrance to the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic. Pushing along the southern edge of the Strait, the icebreaker heads toward Mercy Bay, about half way of Banks Island. The U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker Northwind, commanded by Captain William L. Maloney, USCG, made the first passage through McClure Strait from west to east between August 13 - 21, 1954. The Navy icebreaker USS Burton Island, commanded by Comdr. Everett Trickey, USN, executed the first passage through the Strait from east to west between August 11 - 16. Both ships accomplished the historical fete while conducting oceanographic and hydrographic surveys in the Beaufort Sea and McClure Strait areas on a Joint U.S. - Canadian Expedition participated in by scientists from both countries. International Ice Patrol - 1948. This exciting shot was made from under the wing of a Coast Guard converted B-17 on ice patrol. Here is pictured a dangerous bit of rendezvous - plane - berg - and the USCGC Mendota. Opportunities to take photos such as this come few and far between because of persistent fogs that blanket the Grand Bands area after the first of May. Combined air and surface operation and the effective use of radar and loran by Coast Guard patrol unites contributed to the success of the 1948 International Ice Patrol. It was the mission of the 1948 patrol to locate and report ice conditions constituting a menace to navigation, to determine set and drift of icebergs, to collect weather information and surface and sub-surface oceanographic data, and to keep all interested parties and commercial shipping informed thereof. The importance to mariners of "ice broadcasts" is evidenced by the fact that practically all commercial radio transmission ceases during these broadcasts. T

Iheya Shima Carry-All. A native girl, carrying her baby brother in a harness on her back in traditional fashion, follows alongside a line of amtracs carrying members of the second Marine Division ashore in the capture of Iheya Shima. Coast Guard Helicopter Demonstrates Air-Sea Rescue with New U-Type Equipment. Aerial Acrobatics.. Like a breath taking circus performance, the "shipwreck victim" is hoisted out of the sea, as the Coast Guard Sikorsky helicopter rises and makes its course toward land in a demonstration of a new off-shore air-sea rescue technique. The "Rescuee" is sitting in the new U-Type rescue harness, which the hovering helicopter had lowered to his grasp. The experiment was made in the Atlantic from the Coast Guard Air Station, Brooklyn, N.Y. Coast Guard Commander F. A. Erickson, of Tacoma, Wash. piloted the helicopter; Coast Guardsman Lewis T. Marshall. Aviation Machinist's Mate Second Class, of Peabody, Mass. was the "shipwreck victim.".

The opportunities in Arctic waters for such physical exercises are seldom, but whenever conditions permit boat drills are a must in keeping the crew fit. The Coxswain is Joseph G. Mattiachi, Boatswains Mate 2nd Class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Mattiacci of 20465 Damman Rd. Harper Woods, Michigan. Having spent 30 out of his 33 months of Coast Guard service on board the WESTWIND, this is his second trip to the Arctic.
