In radical contrast to George Bellows's dynamic scenes of New York City's industrial and architectural transformation, this depiction of laborers on the California shoreline shifts his focus to the elemental drama of man and horse in working partnership. The painting was well reviewed in New York soon after it was completed, with one critic deeming it a continuation of the "epic manner of Winslow Homer." American Art 1917

Cremorne Gardens, No. 2 ca. 1870-80 James McNeill Whistler American The progressive expatriate James McNeill Whistler is associated with the "art for arts sake" philosophy, which privileged artistic form over content. Yet his subjects were often seen to be as radical as his ethereal color harmonies. In this so-called nocturne, painted in Londons Cremorne Gardens (near his Chelsea home-studio), Whistler explores the theme of modern life embraced by many of his European associates, especially the French Impressionists. An elegant, manicured park that drew fashionable strollers during the daytime hours, the Gardens at night became a site for lively music, dancing, and fireworks, frequented by a broader range of classes. Edwin Lord Weeks (1849 - 1903), American artist and Orientalist, was born at Boston, Massachusetts, in 1849. He was a pupil of Leon Bonnat and of Jean-Leon Gerome, at Paris. As soon as the Russian conquest of the Caucasus was completed in the late 1850s, the Russian Ministry of War began to send military forces against the Central Asian khanates. Three major population centers of the khanatesTashkent, Bukhara, and Samarkandwere captured in 1865, 1867, and 1868, respectively. In 1868 the Khanate of Bukhara signed a treaty with Russia making Bukhara a Russian protectorate. Khiva became a Russian protectorate in 1873, and the Khokand Khanate finally was incorporated into the Russian Empire, also as a protectorate, in 1876. By 1876 the entire territory comprising present-day Uzbekistan either had fallen under direct Russian rule or had become a protectorate of Russia. The treaties establishing the protectorates over Bukhara and Khiva gave Russia control of the foreign relations of these states and gave Russian merchants important concessions in foreign trade; the khanates retained control of their own internal affairs. Tashkent and Khokand fell directly unde
