The two painters saw each other often that summer, and on a number of occasions they were joined by Renoir. Mäda Primavesi (1903-2000) 1912-13 Gustav Klimt Austrian Mäda Primavesis expression and posture convey a remarkable degree of confidence for a nine-year-old girl, even one who was, by her own account, willful and a tomboy. Klimt made numerous preliminary sketches for this portrait, experimenting with different poses, outfits, and backgrounds before deciding to show Mäda standing tall in a specially-made dress amid a profusion of springlike patterns. The picture testifies to the sophisticated taste of her parents, banker and industrialist Otto Primavesi and his wife Eugenia, who were ardent supporters of progressive Viennese art and design. Because the artist did not yet have privileges to go backstage at the Paris Opéra, his subjects came to his studio to pose. These sessions yielded many large study drawings, which Degas subsequently adapted for other compositions. The work’s title references a woman featured in biblical and Arabic literature who was often portrayed as enamored of her beautiful slave, Joseph. Sargent used lush colors and loose brushwork to describe her Turkish-style pantaloons and silk overdress, and the cashmere shawl on which she lies, to evoke a mood of sensual ease and sumptuous pleasure.
