It originally functioned as a window in an inglenook in the Gilders' home and his wife's studio, at 103 East Fifteenth Street. About 1890, Stanford White (1853-1906), a member of the Gilders' artistic circle, remodeled the house, removed the panel from its architectural setting, and refitted it as a freestanding fire screen. Needlework samplers demonstrated the artistic achievements of students, chief among them being a range of delicate stitch techniques. This sampler records the skills of its ten-year-old maker in handling a dozen embroidery stitches, her abilities working with metallic thread (a challenging medium for the novice), as well as her competence in painting on cloth and applied paper.

Cabinet 1867 Designed by Jean Brandely French When the prototype for this compelling cabinet, now in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, was exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in 1867, it received mixed criticism. The cabinetmaker must have been pleased with the controversial piece because he commissioned this second, nearly identical one for himself. The central plaque by the sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet commemorates the military triumph of Merovech (d. 458), leader of the Salian Franks, over Attila and his marauding Huns at the Battle of the Catalaunian Field in 451. Digital images are arranged geographically, first by country, then by city, then by site complex or monument, with all names in alphabetical order. Location names are derived from the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names (TGN)®, Library of Congress subject headings, and scholarly publications. Published images are followed by unpublished images. Versos of prints and slide mounts were not digitized. The information in any handwritten identifications found on these surfaces was incorporated into the metadata for individual images.
