All the elements of this cabinet are curved, as if the entire piece of furniture were moving. The carved ornament - a combination of plants and flowers and abstract forms - reinforces that impression. Only rarely in the Netherlands did such a large and massive piece of furniture manage to express the Rococo style so perfectly. Perhaps this cabinet was designed by a sculptor and not by a cabinetmaker.Snuff box, Inlaid gold and mother-of-pearl, chased gilt-metal, enamel, A dark blue snuff box with a decorative inlayed top depicting a winged sitting figure., probably Meissen, Germany, ca. 1745-1755, containers, Decorative Arts, Snuff boxRussell Madole, Skin Covered Trunk, c 1939 Skin Covered TrunkCard Case (France); stained, embossed, tooled, and gilded leatherArqueta, siglo XV. Accordingly, the dowry—the financial allotment she was given by her family on her marriage—increased in importance. In theory it was hers, but in reality the dowry was administered by her husband, who assumed responsibility to increase its value. Before the wedding, one or two pairs of chests were ordered and delivered to the bride's house, where they were filled with her marriage portion.2 If, as was often the case, the bride was escorted in a formal procession from her parents' house to the bridegroom's residence, the cassoni were carried along as testimony to the wealth of the two families and the bond between them. Little is known about his life except that he worked in Yunjian, an affluent area twenty miles southwest of Shanghai that has long been associated with the arts. Most of the pieces in this style are scholars accoutrements: incense paraphernalia, brush holders, ruyi scepters, and hand warmers. It seems likely that this censer was once part of a set that also included a box for storing incense, a vase, snd additional implements such as a spoon and tongs.. Gingerbread Mould, 1600-1750.. This wooden gingerbread mould is English and probably dates from the 17th or early 18th century. Gingerbread hornbooks gave children an added incentive for learning their alphabet. In the words of a rhyme written by J. Crane in 1835:. 'The bakers to increase their trade,.. Made alphabets of gingerbread. That folks might swallow what they read. All the letters were digested. Hateful ignorance detested'. Breadcrumbs formed the main ingredient for gingerbread in the 17th century. It was pre-cooked and mixed with spices such as ginger, liquorice, aniseed and cinnamon. The mould gave the mixture shape. Gingerbread made in this way was not baked in an oven... Purchased from Edward H Pinto, 1965.Jardinière with chickens ca. 1880 Haviland & Co. American and French Determined that pottery vessels should be regarded as true works of art, avant-garde ceramicists in France in the last decades of the nineteenth century transformed their craft into an intellectual and emotional endeavor. The pioneers of this revival were Jean Carriès, Ernest Chaplet, Théodore Deck, and Auguste Delaherche. These revolutionary artist-potters embraced artisanal traditions while pursuing lost techniques through exhaustive experimentation. Reacting to what they viewed as an excessive and improper use of ornament, they celebrated the simplicity and sincerity of their medium, following the tenets of the Art Nouveau style taking place in Europe. Based on the principles of the British Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau artists sought to reform the decorative arts by emphasizing uniqueness and a return to craftsmanship. Artist-potters found inspiration in Asian ceramics, particularly Japanese stoneware (a hCasket (England); Made by Frances Basnet; wood, silk, glass beads.
