Fragment of a Frieze 11th century This panel and panels 39.40.58, .61-64 are believed to have formed a large frieze along the entrance to a prayer hall that served a densely populated residential neighborhood. The frieze was originally painted in red and blue and included the word al-sultan, a title that first occurred in monumental epigraphy in the eleventh century with Seljuq and Ghaznavid rulers. It has been suggested that the friezes inscription originally bore the titles of the Seljuq sultan Malik Shah (r. 1073-92).. Fragment of a Frieze 449593

Panel model ca. 1780-85 French This panel displays delicate low relief carving of floral garlands, floral wreaths, and vines, as well as a smoking perfume burner on stand (athénienne) supported on acanthus scrolls ending in floral sprigs, rosettes, and wheatears. The small scale of this neoclassical panel and the high quality carving suggest it may have been made by a decorative sculptor as a masterpiece for presentation at the Académie royale darchitecture (Royal Academy of Architecture) in order to show his talent and secure future commissions. Furniture plaque with figure in relief. Culture: Assyrian. Dimensions: 6.5 x 1.89 x 0.47 in. (16.51 x 4.8 x 1.19 cm). Date: ca. 9th-8th century B.C..This ivory plaque was found in a storage room in Fort Shalmaneser, a royal building at Nimrud that was used to store booty and tribute collected by the Assyrians while on military campaign. It depicts a standing male figure, bearded and with shoulder-length hair parted in the middle. He wears what are probably two long garments, each with a fringed hem: an undertunic with short sleeves that reaches to his ankles, and a robe over this with decoration at the shoulder, held closed by his left hand which is pressed against his chest. His right arm is held down against his side, showing a thick bracelet at the wrist. The plaque was found with several others carved in a similar style, in which plump, stocky figures are shown facing forward and depicted with rounded cheeks, vividly staring eyes, and similar hairstyles. The remnants of blue and red paint and traces of gold leaf are from a later date in antiquity. These remnants indicate that most of the panel's surface would have been vibrantly colored.. A heavy plume adorns his bonnet, a broadsword drawn from its scabbard is uplifted in his right hand, and his left hand holds a shieldlike device. End of Balustrade A.H. 703/A.D. 1303-4 This end of a balustrade demonstrates continuity in the architectural decorative tradition of the late Seljuq period to the Ilkhanid. Vegetal motifs and elaborate scrolls are intertwined with geometrical patterns and inscriptions and flanked by animated scenes. This carved stone was probably a section of a staircase in a private building.
