Tile with Floral Cartouche Design on Ebru (Marble Imitation Pattern) Background late 16th century This tile, restored from six pieces, combines a typical late sixteenth-century floral medallion with a background design in manganese purple that mimics the surface patterns of marble. While not entirely unknown in pottery, designs that simulate marble or other materials were better suited to tile revetments where they blended with the various forms of architectural decoration in Ottoman buildings.. Grisaille Panel ca. 1320-30 French The five panels assembled here come from at least four different lancets of the choir windows at Saint-Ouen at Rouen. They incorporate three different patterns of stylized leaves and tendrils, one with silver-stained blossoms, and three different strapwork designs in four combinations. All are known to have originated in this glazing program. The botanical theme is continued in the border pattern and in three of the central bosses or fermaillets. Cross-Shaped Tile 13th century This cross-shaped tile with a symmetrical leaf pattern was once part of a panel of star- and cross-shaped tiles adorning the wall of an Ilkhanid building. Probably produced in the ceramic center of Kashan in Central Iran, it displays many characteristics typical of this site, including the use of opulent luster glaze, a balanced composition, and the spirals and dots that fill the background.. Tile Panel in the form of an Architectural Niche first half 14th century Hasan ibn `Ali ibn Ahmad Babavaih Scholars have proposed that this large three-piece mihrab-shaped panel once adorned the tomb of the Sufi shaikh 'Abd al-Samad in Natanz. In addition to its selection of Qur'anic verses, the panel includes an inscription describing itself as the work of Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Ahmad Babavaih, a known fourteenth-century tilemaker from Kashan. Indicative of the collaborative nature of this type of work, this piece also contains the signature of the calligrapher who wrote the inscription - 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Fadl Allah..
