Fragment of a Mina'i Bowl 12th-13th century This fragment is overglaze-painted with a seated figure surrounded by dotted branches enclosed in a medallion. The painting technique, now called minai but historically referred to as haft rang (seven color), was a distinctive Iranian tradition employed on stonepaste, possibly transposed from glass enameling. Minai painted wares share some stylistic features with coeval Syrian stonepaste, including the moon-like faces of figures or the dotted branches seen on this piece, that exemplify how a common visual language was adapted to and modified by local techniques, traditions, and tastes. The fragment came to the Museum in 1920, together with a large group of objects bequeathed from the collection of the antique dealer William Milne Grinnell.. Relief mounted as a mirror frame ca. 1568 Wenzel Jamnitzer German Wenzel Jamnitzer was the greatest Mannerist goldsmith in the German-speaking areas. As an imperial goldsmith to the Habsburg court, he served no fewer than four emperors. Much of his fame was based on highly inventive objects and mounted naturalia for princely curiosity cabinets. The design of this relief frame, with personifications of four of the seven liberal arts-Arithmetic, Geometry, Perspective, and Architecture-was adopted from the title page of Jamnitzer's treatise Perspectiva corporum regularium (1568). The ovoid mirror with faceted edges is distinguished by a crowning lion in repoussé silver-a clear reference to Jamnitzer's maker's mark, the letter "W" above a lion's head. A portrait of the artist or of a princely first owner may have been mounted in the oval below. The object was part of a precious silver book cover that was subsequently reconfigured as a mirror.. Fragment from a Vessel late 1400s North Italian In northern Italy few potters made use of the technique of tin glazing. Rather, they coated clay objects with a creamy slip of liquid clay, into which they incised a design. They then applied additional colors, often in yellow and green, before a final firing. Even a small fragment reveals the virtuosity of line often found in these wares.. Fragment from a Vessel. North Italian. late 1400s. Incised slipware with lead glaze. Ceramics

Cabinet with gold mounts and relief ca. 1865-80 After a design by Reinhold Vasters German Long considered to be a masterpiece of the late sixteenth century, this cabinet was identified recently as the work of the great nineteenth-century goldsmith Reinhold Vasters, who reused old timber to buidt part of the carcase. It is possible that the central figure represents Hercules. The gold mounts, rendered in a Renaissance style typical of Vasters, depict additional mythological figures.. Plate ca. 1820 French, Forges les Eaux Faience, or tin-glazed and enameled earthenware, first emerged in France during the sixteenth century, reaching widespread usage among elite patrons during the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, prior to the establishment of soft-paste porcelain factories. Although characterized as more provincial in style than porcelain, French faience was used at the court of Louis XIV as part of elaborate meals and displays, with large-scale vessels incorporated into the Baroque garden designs of Versailles. Earlier examples of French faience attest to the strong influence of maiolica artists from Italy. Later works demonstrate the ways in which cities such as Nevers, Rouen, Lyon, Moustiers, and Marseille developed innovative vessel shapes and decorative motifs prized among collectors throughout Europe. While faience can be created from a wide mixture of clays, it is foremost distinguished by the milky opaque white color achieved by the addition of tin

Winter Farming Scene; (verso) Autumn Farming Scene Katsushika Isai Japanese This unusually large fan, the function of which is uncertain, is painted on both sides with scenes of farming in winter and autumn. Winter is not shown.) The artist's signature, Isai, and two seals, kai and ka, are found on both sides.Isai was one of a large number of artists trained by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), a nineteenth-century giant of printmaking and painting. It is generally recognized that many of the paintings traditionally attributed to this great master were actually executed by some of his pupils, such as Isai. Indeed, this painting reveals many of Hokusai's idiosyncrasies, such as the figure types, the manner of depicting foliage, and the clearly defined recession into space.. The Backgammon Players 1861 Philip Webb British This early masterpiece of the Arts and Crafts Movement exemplifies the collaborative endeavors of William Morris and his circle to improve design standards. Morris believed that a return to the principles of medieval production, with fine artists creating functional objects, could help overcome the evils of industrialization. This cabinet, one of several in which Morris enlisted the participation of Sir Edward Burne-Jones, is an attempt to erase the distinction between the fine and the applied arts. The painting on leather with a punched background is itself a craftsman's medium. Although the cabinet is usually described as in the "medieval style," it is actually a vivid example of the ability of the Morris firm to convert the eclecticism that marked much of the art of the late nineteenth century into an original and modern style. Although Burne-Jones's painted figures are in medieval costume much of the decoration is equally Oriental in

Flap of a Bookbinding (Jild-i kitab) 16th century Flaps of this shape were employed for protecting book covers since at least the 13th century, but the use of lacquer over painted leather or pasteboard only began in the late 15th century. By the 1540s the repertoire of imagery on lacquer bookbindings had grown from floral and plant motifs resembling manuscript illumination to real and fantastic animals in landscape to figures in landscape, as in this flap. Here the standing figure with a walking stick and the youth below face right, where the main grouping of figures would have been arranged on the book cover. The artist has outlined the trees and plants in gold, a technique ultimately borrowed from 15th century Chinese lacquer.. Flap of a Bookbinding (Jild-i kitab) 451754

Terracotta lekythos (oil flask) ca. 500 B.C. Attributed to the Diosphos Painter Perseus flying away with the head of Medusa, while Pegasos springs from her severed neckPerseus, son of the god Zeus and the human princess, Danae, was given the task of beheading Medusa, one of the three Gorgons, whose faces were so horrible that seeing them turned men to stone. With the help of a magic cap and winged shoes given to him by Athena, Perseus became invisible and flew to the place where the three sisters were asleep. There he cut off Medusa's head. On this vase, Perseus flees with the head in a sack as the immortal winged horse Pegasos springs from the body of the dead Gorgon. Perseus and the horse are shown in the traditional black-figure manner, while the Gorgon is drawn in outline, probably influenced by the newly developed red-figure technique..
