Plate ca. 1723-35 Chinese, for British market A Chinese plate painted with this exact composition must have served as a model for the painters at the Bow factory in England, for a Bow plate in the Museums collection (2014.600) is decorated with precisely the same composition executed in a very similar palette. Surprisingly, one is able to match a piece of British or European porcelain with a Chinese prototype relatively rarely, and it is even more unusual to find an original model that has been copied with such fidelity. This Chinese plate makes an extremely interesting comparison with the Bow example, and both the similarities and slight differences between the two are instructive, as it reflects both the type of Chinese porcelain being imported into England in the second quarter of the eighteenth century and how chinoiserie-decorated porcelains were marketed to English consumers in the middle decades of the eighteenth century.. . On the front: inside the central cartouche a landscape with tranwilg, banana trees, bamboo and prunus with fanning branches. In the foreground water with rocks. Of the three figures, one man and one woman have a range in their hand, the other man (with mustache) sits between them in a rock and seems to be called the interaction between the others. The woman is wearing a complicated hairdown and has been set up in different places with red paint. On the back: within a similar landscape, a walled hut is visible to the right with the woman looking over the low wall. In the middle, the man with mustache is on a stool and looks at the woman, while left a man with a filled dish looks already left behind. Now again a few keys red in the figures. Written by Wang Shifu (ca. 1260-1336) during the Tang dynasty (681-907), it is a tale about star-crossed lovers: Zhang Sheng, a young impoverished scholar; and Cui Yingyin, the daughter of a high-ranking official. . This superb plate is decorated with motifs in red and green enamels and gold on a cream ground. The fish in the centre, a carp feeding on water plants, is painted with such freedom and energy that it almost seems to be leaping out of the plate.

Buffe ca. 1550 French This buffe belongs to a burgonet also in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. no. 04.3.217). The medallions on either side of the helmet bowl are embossed with scenes from Greek mythology depicting the Battle of Centaurs and Lapiths, a popular subject in Renaissance art. The compositions derive in part from design by Rosso Fiorentino (1494-1540), one of the Italian artists called to Fontainebleau to work for the French court.Probably made for Henry II of France (reigned 1547-59), the helmet passed as a diplomatic gift to the Medici court in Florence later in the sixteenth century. It is illustrated in a portrait of Cosimo II de' Medici (1590-1621), grand duke of Tuscany, in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. no. 22.150).. Buffe. French. ca. 1550. Steel, gold. Maker: Watchmaker: Jacques Goullons (French, active Paris, 1626-died 1671). Date: ca. 1645-50.Goullons specialized in watch movements with painted enamel cases, including one for King Louis XIV. This case exterior's miniatures depict the Virgin and Child with an angel, copying an engraving by Pierre Daret, and Joseph being awakened by an angel, after an engraving by Michel Dorigny. These engravings recorded paintings by Simon Vouet. Such enameled watchcases are rarely signed, and the best enamelers were so adept at reproducing the style of their sources that individual masters are difficult to identify.
