Five Tiles from an Inscriptional Frieze early 14th century Once part of a calligraphic frieze within a tomb or religious structure, this tile holds three lines of religious text. Executed in thuluth script, the raised writing of the central band is part of a Quranic verse from Sura 2 (The Cow). The calligraphic inscriptions painted in luster above and below are from other sections of the Quran, although most of the luster on the lower register has worn off. Perhaps set at eye level above a dado of geometric tiles, the full group once formed a continuous band of text. A total of twenty tiles from this frieze are known to exist, including eight in the Museums collection.. Five Tiles from an Inscriptional Frieze 446691

The narrow bands of naskh script above and below also contain Quranic verses, here painted in luster over an opaque white glaze. Perhaps set at eye-level above a dado of geometric tiles, the full group would have once formed a continuous band of text. A total of twenty tiles from this frieze are known to exist, including eight in the Museums collection.. Tile from a Frieze 442871

The Farnese Table ca. 1565-73 Designed by Jacopo Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola Italian The Farnese table, one of the most beautiful and evocative pieces of Renaissance furniture in existence, was acquired by the Museum in 1958. Two years later, curator Olga Raggio presented it as a "rediscovered work by Vignola" in a magisterial article that has remained a model for subsequent studies in the history of furniture.1In its form-a marble top supported on three marble piers-the table reflects ancient Roman prototypes, such as are depicted in ancient frescoes.2 Each pier is carved in the center of each side with a grotesque torso and a coat of arms and on each end with a sphinx emerging from foliage. The top is a slab of white marble sumptuously inlaid in ancient Roman style with many different colored marbles and with semiprecious stones called pietre dure. So rich is the inlay that the white marble matrix is visible only in the lines that surround various borders and the larger geometri
