Fragment with an Interlace Medallion and Bands 3rd-6th century Two bands with a scroll of heart-shaped leaves and two birds are paired with a large roundel. The medallion encloses a beautiful interlace within an eight-pointed star. Crosses circumscribed by circles fill the spaces between the star and the running wave border. The complex patterning is created using a decorative technique known as the flying shuttle or flying needle. Shuttles are devices in a loom for passing the horizontal (weft) threads through the spaces between the vertical (warp) threads. In this technique, the weaver made additional passes of the shuttle to create lines of ornament that do not follow the regular pattern of the weave. Fragment of a Stela 4th century Coptic In his left hand, the man holds an ancient Egyptian musical instrument called a sistrum. At his side is a vine and above his shoulder is a small hawk standing on an altar. The painting is done in two shades of purple (darker possibly originally black) on a white plaster background.This piece might be a re-used panel from a Roman-Egyptian coffin. The motifs on the panel, the hawk and sistrum, were used in the ancient Egyptian religion. The panel was sawed down the middle before being put in burial chamber, and the left side was never recovered. Decorative band perhaps from a shrine with the name of Ptolemy X. Dimensions: 5.5 x 18 cm (2 3/16 x 7 1/16 in.). Reign: reign of Ptolemy X Alexander I. Date: 107-88 B.C..This silver strip with the throne name of Ptolemy X Alexander i must have fitted onto another item, probably a shrine or temple furnishing. The cartouche records the throne name of Ptolemy X: "The heir of the Beneficient God and the Beneficient Goddess and female Re, who is the chosen of Ptah, who brings forth the order of Re, the living sacred image of Amun." The female Re was his mother Cleopatra III, who had replaced her older son with Ptolemy X. Ptolemy X eventually had her killed, and was then overthrown by the resurgent Ptolemy IX. The dynastic strife paralleled continuing internal strife in the country, with eventual heavy-handed suppression of the Theban region. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Date: dated A.H. 266/A.D. 879-80.Derived from the Persian word for embroidery, the term tiraz specified textiles inscribed with good wishes, the date and place of manufacture, and the name of the ruler who ordered the fabric in order to make robes of honor to present to his courtiers. Plaque: bull-men on the obverse; lion attacking a horned animal on the reverse ca. 8th-7th century B.C. Iran This ivory plaque is decorated with an incised scene on each side. Holes drilled on the upper and lower edges probably allowed it to be mounted in a frame, although it is not known how it was originally displayed so that the images on both sides could be viewed or what the objects function may have been. A neatly carved guilloche border is preserved at both short edges. On one side, a lion attacks a horned animal which flees to the right; the scene is crudely incised and the animals are rendered as outlines with sections marked by patterning. The other side shows two frontal bull-men standing side by side, each raising an arm to an animal at the outer edge of the scene: a lion at right, and a large animal that may be a bear at right. This oval originally belonged to a matched set that would have decorated either a unisex tunic or shawl. The fragment features a distinctive semi-abstract style of figural representation.

Grape Leaves from a Curtain, 400s-500s. Egypt, Byzantine period, 5th-6th Century. Weft-faced plain weave with tapestry weave and supplementary weft wrapping; undyed linen and dyed wool; average: 19 x 31.5 cm (7 1/2 x 12 3/8 in.). This deep-purple grape leaf once decorated the plain linen ground of a curtain. It probably refers to Dionysus, the classical god of wine, whose cult was popular in Egypt through the 6th century.

Homer's Iliad, Homer's Odyssey, Aeschylus's Tragedies and les Argonautes 1793-1810 Italy.
