Date: 1866.Determined that pottery vessels should be regarded as true works of art, avant-garde ceramicists in France in the last decades of the nineteenth century transformed their craft into an intellectual and emotional endeavor. The pioneers of this revival were Jean Carriès, Ernest Chaplet, Théodore Deck, and Auguste Delaherche. These revolutionary artist-potters embraced artisanal traditions while pursuing lost techniques through exhaustive experimentation. Reacting to what they viewed as an excessive and improper use of ornament, they celebrated the simplicity and sincerity of their medium, following the tenets of the Art Nouveau style taking place in Europe. Based on the principles of the British Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau artists sought to reform the decorative arts by emphasizing uniqueness and a return to craftsmanship. The design of peonies in the center of this dish, and the way in which the peonies are painted, reflect an awareness of earlier Chinese traditions. Vietnamese potters, who continued fourteenth-century Chinese styles well into the sixteenth century, often competed for markets, particularly those in Southeast Asia, with the kilns at Jingdezhen.. Meissen porcelain manufactory Meissen, c. 1735 Hard Paste PorcelainVegetable Dish 1885 Union Porcelain Works Union Porcelain Works was one of the most important and inventive American porcelain manufacturers in the second-half of the nineteenth century. In addition to their imaginative works designed by the German-born artistic director, Karl H. L. Müller, the firms mainstay was the production of heavy porcelain hotel dinnerware. This extensive service was made by Thomas Carll Smith, head of the Union Porcelain Works, as a gift to his daughter, Pastora Forest Smith Chace. The neoclassical decoration of the gilt bellflower and basket motif is complimented by turquoise enamel. Unlike the firms more eccentric and lavish designs created for their display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876, the pottery favored a more restrained classical style for their dinner services. This service descended in the Chace family.. Vegetable Dish 7373Plate Mi Nia (Meissen)Plate from Dessert Service: Venus Looking Glass, c. 1800. Derby (Crown Derby Period) (British).
