Sugar bowl (part of a service) ca. 1758-69 Chelsea Porcelain Manufactory The gilding on these pieces (see 54.163.7a, b-.34) is of a very high order, with tooled work on a thick application of honey gilding selectively matte and burnished for a lively design of pheasants, peacocks, and swallows in a landscape. The deep bowl was for little cakes. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #407. While Chinese porcelains were exported to Europe and Britain in larger quantities during this period, Japanese porcelains were prized for their boldly patterned and richly colored decoration. The popularity of works such as these changed European taste for Asian porcelain, with a more vivid palette preferred over the blue and white decoration which once defined imported porcelains.. Yuan had been named president of the Chinese Republic in 1912, and his ambitions to become emperor were realized in December 1915, when he "accepted" the throne. His reign was short-lived, however, as he died in June 1916.This pair of vases have mirror-image designs that have been painted over the glaze in sepia and black pigments with minute attention to detail. They are marked on the base with Yuan Shikai's reign title, Hongxian, and they stand as proof of a degree of excellence in ceramic manufacture that is generally unexpected in wares of this period.. Made in fairly standard shapes, they were designed to fit with dozens of others on a shelf, often in a pharmacy or shop. Their handles therefore tend to fit within the vessels profile, and the cylindrical albarello type is generally narrower at the middle than at the top or bottom, making it easy to grip. Other common features include inscriptions indicating contents and flanged lips to help secure cloth or paper seals. The decoration, usually more elaborate on one side than the other, can sometimes link pieces to a known dispensary or specific workshop or artist.. Albarello. Italian, Faenza. ca. 1470-1500. The primary aesthetic impact of the vases lies in the strong pink ground, and the ‘cloisonné decoration, applied in bands, is further removed from a true cloisonné appearance than is normally encountered in Dressers work in this genre. There is a boldness to the simplicity of the decorative scheme, which relies on a strong color offset by two primary areas of dense pattern. These vases are unlike any other ceramic works designed by Dresser in the Museums collection. Listen to experts illuminate this artwork's story Listen Play or pause #418.
