The slanted surface of the sunken grinding area displays multiple layers of natural markings within the stone in purple and various shades of green. The wooden box is also carved in the shape of a length of bamboo. The ink slab and its case bear three inscriptions, which offer clues and raise questions about the work's date. An inscription on the underside of the stone and one on the lid of the box, although signed Qinggong Daoren and Nancun, respectively, both have the same seal, Zuo. While these names are unknown from other sources, they probably denote the same person. The stone's inscription is dated to 1370, which is curiously early, considering the good condition of the box. The third inscription, on the upper side of the slab, comprising eight delicate characters executed in regular script,Model or a water tank. (29.21 × 22.86 × 34.77 cm) (closed), Lacquered wood, metal, velvet, Japan, 19th century, This lacquer storage cabinet was made to store a collection of inrō, small containers for holding a variety of personal items that could be hung from the sash of ones robe. Perhaps surprising given that function, the exterior of the cabinet features an assortment of motifs that mimic metal objects associated with Japans warrior culture: sword guards (tsuba), dagger hilts (kozuka), and, on the inside, arrowheads. Each of these motifs mimics the artistry of Japanese metalworkers in the 1800s and several even have signatures by famous metal artists, but they are actually lacquer. In fact, each of the motifs was created by applying layers of colored lacquer in reverse order to plaster molds of actual tsuba and kozuka.Five-case inro showing flowering cherry branches seen through a bamboo blind, 19th century, Kajikawa School, Japanese, 3 9/16 × 1 7/8 × 1 in. The perspective is such that the viewer feels as though he is peeking out from beneath the blind to catch a glimpse of the blossoming plum trees. The scene is executed in takamaki-e with gold and silver powder and colored lacquer over a roiro background.Iron sheet spring lock with rectangular lock plate, one lap, curl and an excellent sting, door lock padlock lock closing device iron, handforged riveted hingesHalf model or a 60-gun ship of the line.
