Each LOB contains a medallion whose frame is made up of dolphins intersecting, raised tails, above which a barbel -like orphan and other soft ornaments. The medallions contain scenes that can be grouped as couples: two performances of a winged child on the back of a dolphin, one with a stick with fish in the hand, the other holding a trident; Two performances of a child on the back of a hippocampus, one child winged, holding a stick with fish; And two performances of a winged child, one with a trident, on the back of a sea creature with a goat body and fish tail. The performances are visually connected to each other because the equal sea creatures swim in each other's direction, while the children look back and thus form the connection with the group in addition. Urn-shaped sugar bowls, both plain and fluted, appear repeatedly in Revere's ledgers as "sugar urns" or "fluted sugar vases." The helmet-shaped creampot with high looped handle and square plinth also epitomizes Neoclassical taste. Each piece is engraved with bright-cut bands of tasseled swags and wavescroll ornament. Its identical mate is now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The symmetrical, densely configured cartouche is slightly old-fashioned for this date, although consistent with the conservative nature of church plate. The provenance of the West Churchs silver reflects the changing fortunes of the congregation. The original church, a wood-frame structure built in 1737, was used as barracks by British soldiers in the years leading up to the Revolutionary War. Severely damaged during the War, the building was reconstructed in 1806. By the late nineteenth century, many affluent families had moved from Bostons once-exclusive West End to the newly fashionable Back Bay. The Church disbanded its congregation in 1887; the building was closed in 1894; and the church After Adams and Company, Footed Bowl, c. 1890-1930, colorless glass.Bell-shaped cup and saucer with a portrait of Lieve Geelvinck, anonymous, c. 1760 Klock -shaped head and dish of porcelain, painted on the glaze in black and gold. The model for this vase was designed by Alexandre-Évariste Fragonard (French, 1780-1850), one of the most prolific designers at the Sèvres factory during the 1820s and 1830s. Given the title vase gothique Fragonard at Sèvres, the model transforms a Medici vase shape (entry 74) with the addition of prominent scrolling handles that are embellished with trefoils and stylized vegetation in low relief.1 The elaborate profile of the handles diminishes the essentially Neoclassical character of the vase’s form, and instead, the form com-bines harmoniously with the painted neo- Gothic decoration to suggest, however loosely, a work of art made in the late fifteenth century.2 Nonetheless, the Gothic quality of the vase’s design is sligh. .Porringer 1750-1800 Paul Revere Jr. American.
