Praying Angels and Poppies (Border Design for Thomas Malory, "Le Morte d'Arthur," J. M. Dent 1893-94, Part III, book vii, chapter i, p. 219). Artist: Aubrey Vincent Beardsley (British, Brighton, Sussex 1872-1898 Menton). Dimensions: Sheet: 11 1/8 x 8 3/4 in. (28.3 x 22.2 cm). Date: by May 30, 1893.Beardsley made hundreds of detailed ink drawings to illustrate J. M. Dent's 1893-94 edition of Le Morte d'Arthur, and this border design was used to frame a tale of King Arthur's piety in book seven, chapter one, titled "How Beaumains Came to King Arthur's Court and Demanded Three Petitions of King Arthur." The theme is underscored by angels whose repeated forms depend on a medievalist aesthetic, but the irregular shape of the lilies--shown open and closed with curvilinear stems--anticipates Art Nouveau. Design for a Frieze with a Censer, Sphinxes and Acanthus Scrolls ca. 1760-80 Gilles Paul Cauvet French Charles and Jayne Wrightsmans eye for fine detail is captured in their acquisitions of studies for furniture, objets de vertu (small luxury items), and ornament. Among their earliest donations were drawings by the French sculptor and cabinetmaker Gilles Paul Cauvet. Throughout his career, Cauvet made designs for both monumental architecture and small, finely crafted objects. His rendering of a frieze with acanthus scrolls and sphinxes is an example of his delicate hand, as are the numerous drawings—from sketches to highly finished renderings—found in the Wrightsman album of designs for fountains, vases, wall panels, furniture, and ornament. The works correspond closely to Cauvets printed oeuvre, which was published in 1777 under the title Recueil dornemens à lusage des jeunes artistes (Collection of Ornament Designs for Use by Young Artists).. Lunette and decorative panel, one of twelve, 1884-1885, Louis Henri Sullivan; Maker: Northwestern Terra Cotta Works (a.k.a. Norweta), American, 1856-1924, Terracotta, United States, Chicago Style, Louis Sullivan designed these terracotta panels for the exterior of the Scoville Building in Chicago, one of the Adler and Sullivan firm's earliest commissions. It required them to remodel an existing Adler structure to accord with a new, much larger addition. The terracotta pieces shown here formed part of the organic decoration of stylized plants with which Sullivan tied the two buildings together. This lunette ornamented the arch above the windows of the top (fifth) story. It has an undulating design of ferns unfurling and would have complemented other organically-inspired terracotta pieces throughout the exterior.

Mirror surround with vases designed 1758-67, woven 1764-71 General conception by Jacques Germain Soufflot The Tapestry Room from Croome Court, Worcestershire, the seat of the Earls of Coventry, was begun in 1763 and finished in 1771. The sixth Earl of Coventry (1722-1809) commissioned these tapestries for Croome Court from Jacques Neilson's workshop at the Royal Gobelins Manufactory in Paris in August 1763. Portraying scenes from classical myths symbolizing the elements, the medallions are based on designs by François Boucher. The set was delivered and in place by June 1771. The group was the first using this design to be woven with a crimson background and it may have been the first made specifically to extend around four walls of a room without architectural frames.. Mirror surround with vases. French, Paris. designed 1758-67, woven 1764-71. Wool, silk (22-24 warps per inch, 9-10 per cm.). Textiles-Tapestries
