Endymion Sleeping. Artist: Guercino (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri) (Italian, Cento 1591-1666 Bologna). Dimensions: sheet: 8 3/8 x 9 3/4 in. (21.2 x 24.8 cm). Date: 1635-50.A naked shepherd slumbers for eternity in the moonlit landscape, his staff discarded at his side, his cloak gathered beneath his arms as a pillow. Perpetually young and handsome, Endymion is beloved by the moon goddess Selene-whose presence here is suggested by the waning crescent in the sky. The largely self-trained Bolognese artist Guercino (whose nickname means "squinty-eyed" in Italian) made this drawing in about 1650, at the height of his artistic maturity. He sketched the scene with characteristic energy, in sinuous lines of dark brown ink softened at the edges with fluent washes that shine against the white surface of the sheet.Sir Denis Mahon (see here "References": Mahon 1967, p. 8) first considered this drawing to be a study for the now lost picture of Endymion in full length painted for Don Antonio Ruffo

Weeping Woman Kneeling, Seen from Behind ca. 1634-38 Jacob Backer Dutch This chalk sketch shows a kneeling woman in historic dress, bringing a cloth to her face. Like many of his Dutch contemporaries, Jacob Backer made numerous such figure studies in preparation of large scale paintings. This particular figure, in a slightly adjusted pose, was used as a model for Christ and the Adulterous Woman, an oil painting dateable circa 1636.1 Backer was a prolific painter of both portraits and works of historic subject matter, active in Amsterdam. Several of his figure studies on blue paper survive, which, it has been thought, were made after live models in workshop sessions, organized together with his colleague Govert Flinck (1615-1660). The artists were well-acquainted, as they were both native to the northern town of Leeuwarden, where they enjoyed their training at the studio of Lambert Jacobsz. (ca. 1598-1636).Like many of his contemporaries, Backer used blue paper for his figure studies,

The Blessed Damozel - Study for one of the Pairs of Lovers, 1876. Artist: Dante Gabriel Rossetti.. A study for one of the couples in the background of the Blessed Damozel. This particular group appears in the left background of the 1875-78 version of the painting in the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, comissioned by William Graham. There is also a version of the painting in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (1875-79). The work is based on a poem, 'The Blessed Damozel', by Rossetti. Rossetti is here seen to be making pencil revisions to the back of the male figure.
