Disaster at Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada on 6th December 1917, when a French cargo ship, the 'SS Mont-Blanc' caught fire in the harbour and drifted inland, whereupon it exploded (it was carrying a cargo of benzoil and picric acid), resulting in the death of approx. 2000 people and the utter devastation of a wide area. 1,100 Feared Dead in Algerian Earthquakes - French soldiers working among the ruins of the Hotel Baudouin, Orleansville.More than 1,100 people are believed to have lost their lives in the earthquakes which shook the town of Orleansville and neighbouring districts in Central Algeria last week.So far rescue workers have recovered over 750 bodies but it is certain that about 400 more are still buries under the piles of masonry. 30,000 Visitors To Site Of Roman Temple -- The long queue slowly passing the remains of the Roman Temple which was devoted to the worship of Mithras. 30,000 people visited the ramins of the ancient Roman Temple uncovered during building operations on a bomb-damaged area near St.Paul's Cathedral, London.Discussions are now going on as to whether the site can be preserved or whether it will have to be re-buried under the new building -a large block of offices. Effect of an enemy aviator bomb in Trieste.

The First World War hit St Quentin very hard. In September 1914, the city was overrun, and it endured a harsh occupation. From 1916, it lay at the heart of the war zone, because the Germans had integrated it into the Hindenburg Line. After the evacuation of the population in March, the town was systematically looted and industrial equipment removed or destroyed. The fighting destroyed it: 80% of buildings (including the Basilica) were damaged.

Leningrad: Shelling Still Goes on: The Siege of Leningrad has been raised, but still the Nazie are only a few miles away from the city, Shelling still goes on.
