Rama and Lakshmana Overwhelmed by Arrows: Folio from the Siege of Lanka series ca. 1725 Attributed to Manaku "Rendering himself invisible by virtue of the boon he received from Brahma, Indrajit, the son of Ravana.. loosened sharp arrows bright as lightening on Rama and Lakshmana.. so not a hair's breath on their bodies was not lacerated, pricked and pierced by these irresistible darts." The Ramayana tells us that the shafts resembled serpents, a metaphor the artist rendered literally, depicting writhing snakes covering the bodies of the two fallen heroes. Surrounding them are the distressed monkey and bear armies that carry boulders and trees in preparation for their defense. In this unfinished preparatory drawing the artist, Manaku, brilliantly conveyed the essence of the narrative. We can only imagine how much more powerful a work it would have been if finished in the characteristically robust palette of the early eighteenth-century Guler style, as seen in Rama Releases the Demon

The Last Supper, after Leonardo da Vinci. Artist: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn) (Dutch, Leiden 1606-1669 Amsterdam). Dimensions: 14 1/4 x 18 11/16 in. (36.2 x 47.5 cm). Date: 1634-35.This unusually large red-chalk drawing by Rembrandt is closely based on an early print after Leonardo da Vinci's famous mural of the Last Supper in Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan. Far from slavishly replicating his model, Rembrandt has recast all the figures, intensifying their reactions to Christ's words, and has condensed the space they occupy. The Lehman sheet is one of three drawings by Rembrandt based on Leonardo's "Last Supper," a work that profoundly captured his imagination. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Rembrandt (Rembrandt van Rijn).

Punchinellos Felling (or Planting) a Tree. Artist: Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (Italian, Venice 1727-1804 Venice). Dimensions: 13 7/8 x 18 5/8 in. (35.3 x 47.3 cm). Date: late 18th-early 19th century.Domenico Tiepolo's 104 drawings illustrating the life of Punchinello, a popular commedia dell'arte character, trace the amusing story of the everyman in elaborate detail--from his parentage, birth, and childhood to his diversions and adventures in near and distant lands to his illness, his death, and the apparition of his ghost. Nine sheets from the series are in the Robert Lehman Collection. This energetic narrative of a group of Punchinello figures felling a tree may be an allusion to the so-called Tree of Liberty erected by Napoleonic troops as a symbol of their conquest of the Venetian Republic in 1797. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA. Author: Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo.

Pyrrhus in the House of Glaucias. Artist: Augustin Pajou (French, Paris 1730-1809 Paris); Christie's, Paris. Dimensions: Sheet: 22 5/16 × 31 5/16 in. (56.7 × 79.5 cm). Date: late 18th century. This drawing illustrates a scene from Plutarch's Lives: the infant king Pyrrhus, after he is banished from his native Epirus, is presented to the Illyrian king Glaucias and his wife to request asylum. This large and fluidly worked sheet was included among the drawings Pajou exhibited in the Salon of 1759 and was part of the collection of his former teacher, the sculptor Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne the Younger (French, 1704-1778). The precisely delineated shadows evoke the shallow space of a relief sculpture, and in fact, this composition would go on to be realized in three dimensions, twice in plaster and once in leather. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Temptation of St. Anthony (recto); Fantastic Landscape (verso) ca. 1520 Attributed to Jan Wellens de Cock Netherlandish This drawing depicts motifs associated with representations of the Temptation of Saint Anthony. The bearded saint kneels in prayer before a rock supporting a book, resistant to the torments and temptations offered by the surrounding figures. A couple approach Anthony from the left, while a variety of demons proceed past a tree toward him from the right. Though the image of the saint, his tormentors, and the burning building behind are in proper proportion to each other, they are not contiguous. The prominent, undefined areas of empty space on the sheet and the lack of relationship between the foreground figures and background, in particular, suggest that these motifs were not conceived in preparation for another work but were copied from an unknown source. The drawing style is consistent with works associated with Jan Wellens de Cock, an Antwerp-based painter and draf

A Group of Standing Monks and other Figures 1630s-40s Jan Lievens This outstanding, large sheet by Jan Lievens is one of the rare figure studies by the artist whose drawn oeuvre is composed mostly of landscape and portrait drawings. Lievens, probably best known as Rembrandts early studio mate, spent a good deal of his career beyond the city of Amsterdam, in London, Antwerp, The Hague, and Dusseldorf and his peripatetic life is reflected in the diverse sources of inspiration and the demands of varied patronage that can be observed in his work. His varied subjects and styles have led to the artists drawings often eluding correct attribution. An 18th-century attribution to Agostino Carracci is inscribed on the mount of this drawing, however, the loose handling of the pen here relates stylistically to drawings by Lievens including a sheet of figures and head studies in the Kunstmuseum Dusseldorf and a sheet with a river god in a private collection. The nature of the group that Lievens de
