Sleep. Artist: Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (French, Lyons 1824-1898 Paris). Dimensions: 26 1/8 x 41 3/4 in. (66.4 x 106 cm). Date: ca. 1867-70.The motif of sleep offered Puvis the opportunity to depict reclining bodies from the front, the back, and the side, embracing and alone. This is a smaller replica of an 1867 painting (Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille) that Puvis regarded as his "favorite work." He associated the composition with a fragment from the Aeneid by the ancient Roman poet Virgil: "It was the hour when the first rest of weary mortals begins" (book 2, line 268). The text refers to a brief (and illusory) respite from war, but Puvis portrays untroubled repose after harvesting--a recurring theme in his art. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels Workshop of Bernardino Luini (Italian, Milanese School, circa 1480-1532). Madonna and Child Enthroned with Angels, mid-16th century. Oil on poplar panel, 96 3/4 x 54 1/16 in. (245.7 x 137.3 cm). The Christ Child is depicted holding a glass sphere, which identified him to Renaissance audiences as lux mundi, the light of the world. This painting is a replica, created in the workshop of Bernardino Luini, of the central section of Luinis 1523 altarpiece in the Basilica of San Magno in Legnano (near Milan). It was common in Renaissance Italy for artists and their studios to produce copies of their celebrated works for private clients and churches. Small incision marks (only visible when seen illuminated from one side, at an oblique angle) suggest that this composition was based on the same preparatory drawing as the original altarpiece. European Art mid-16th century
