Apart from Jesus, Mary Magdalene is the only individual in Tissots series accorded more than one study, or portrait—an exception that announces her importance, not only to the narrative itself but also to the artist. As scholars have suggested, Tissot appears to have modeled the Magdalenes features after his late mistress, Mrs. Kathleen Newton, who had died of tuberculosis in 1882. Like many in the nineteenth century, the painter was particularly interested in the occult, and he had attended séances in hopes of establishing contact with the spirit of his deceased beloved. Cafe House, Cairo (Casting Bullets) 1884 or earlier Jean-Léon Gérôme French Bashi-bazouks, mercenary soldiers in the army of the Turkish sultan, were known for their lawlessness and brutality, but Gérôme usually depicted them at leisure, as he did here, rather than engaged in battle. His frequent repetitions of the subject over a thirty-year period, in conjunction with a technique that matured early and changed little, make these canvases difficult to date on the basis of style alone. Nasreddine Dinet was born as Alphonse-Étienne Dinet; (1861 - 1929) was a French orientalist painter and was one of the founders of the Société des Peintres Orientalistes. He became so enchanted with North Africa (Algeria) and its culture, that he converted to Islam, and was proficient in Arabic.

Tissot visually conveys the accumulation of these accusations by filling the gallery at left with a frenzied crowd, each person raising his hand to be heard by the judges, who occupy an unseen but elevated dais at the top of the stairs to the right. A 'harem' is not a bordello, seraglio or brothel, but refers to the women's quarters, usually in a polygynous household, which are forbidden to men. It originated in the Near East and is typically associated in the Western world with the Ottoman Empire. Female seclusion in Islam is emphasized to the extent that any unlawful breaking into that privacy is haram ie, 'forbidden'. A Muslim harem does not necessarily consist solely of women with whom the head of the household has sexual relations (wives and concubines), but also their young offspring, other female relatives or odalisques, which are the concubines' servants. The harem may either be a palatial complex, as in Romantic tales, in which case it includes staff (women and eunuchs), or simply their quarters, in the Ottoman tradition separated from the men's selamlik. A hammam is a common bath house.
