The Death of Christopher Columbus, from "Le Monde Illustré" July 14, 1860 Henry Linton British Linton's wood engraving published in a Paris periodical reproduces a canvas by the French academic painter Robert-Fleury. In the 1840s the artist had painted "The Reception of Christopher Columbus by King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain in Barcelona," and "Christopher Columbus received by the Spanish Court" (Musée du Luxembourg). Here, a decade and a half later, he shows the famous explorer at the end of his life. The painting was shown in a 1860 exhibition of modern paintings from private collections held at 26, Boulevard des Italiens. Other artists included were Bonington, Delacroix, Rousseau, Isabey, Meissonier, Millet, Corot and Ingres, and it is interesting that this work was chosen to represent the exhibition.. This illiustration dates to the early 1900s and shows the death of Archimedes (c. 212 B.C.). Archimedes is considered one of the worlds master mathematicians. His mechanical inventions enabled his native city, Syracuse, to withstand a Roman siege for three years. This 1912 images shows Cleopatra dropping a pearl into a golblet of wine. The Roman writer Pliny the Elder, in his Natural History, told of Cleopatra betting Marc Antony that she could host the most expensive dinner in history. To impress Antony and the Roman Empire he represented with the extent of Egypts wealth., she crushed one large pearl from a pair of earrings and dissolved it in a goblet of wine (or vinegar), before gulping it down (the subject of this illustration.) This image shows the painting titled Sacrifice of Iphegenia, with the appearance of the goddess artemis by Regunald Arthur. Iphegenia is also spelled Iphigenia. Iphigenia was the daughter of Agamemnon, leader of the Greek forces against the Troy in the Trojan War. To appease the goddess Artemis (the Roman Diana), Agamemnon was told to sacrifice Iphigenia, seen in this illustration at Aulis, the port town in eastern Greece, where Agamemnon's fleet was prevented by Artemis (seen in upper left) from sailing until he had sacrificed her. When the sacrifice was about to take place, Iphigenia was whisked away to Taurus and an animal sent in her place. Reginald Arthur (18711934) was a British painter.
