He helped organize the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874 and was the only artist to participate in all eight exhibitions. He had constant difficulties selling his prints and most were never editioned during his lifetime. He only printed 20 impressions of Théorie de Baigneuses in 1897, however a number of impressions were printed after his death. His back and shoulders are completely wrapped in a large shawl (chadar). Of the hip cloth (veshti, lungi) that he is wearing, only a few folds are visible on the right. Around his head with short-cropped hair he is wearing a headscarf or cap. The standing man wears a knee-length hip cloth (veshti, lungi) that is pulled down between the legs and rolled up wide at the waist, and a shawl (chadar) over his left shoulder and left upper arm. The upper body, right arm and left lower arm are uncovered. He is looking at his hands with which he is holding up a piece of palm leaf (). Both men probably come from South India and were put to work in the reconstruction in Colombo. The overall program was developed by Maximilian I and Johannes Stabius in 1512 and recorded by Marx Treitz-Sauerwein; the manuscripts with this text survive at the Nationbibliothek in Vienna. The illustrations, designed between 1516 and 1518, were largely the work of Hans Burgkmair, with contributions by Albrecht Altdorfer, Hans Springinklee, Albrecht Dürer, Leonhard Beck, and Hans Schäufelen. The project was incomplete as of Maximilian's death in 1519, and the first edition was not published until 1526.
