Head of a Girl Looking Up n.d. Jean-Baptiste Greuze French Published in 1762, the treatise Emile, or On Education by the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) transformed educational theory and shaped a new image of childhood defined by innocence and virtue. This theme was quickly taken up by artists such as the sculptor Jean Antoine Houdon, the portraitist Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun, and the genre painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze. Further inspired by the philosopher Denis Diderot, who also believed that education was an important tool to moralize society, Greuze depicted several scenes featuring the instruction of young children. In addition, he devoted numerous sheets to the study of facial expression; here, the raised head and uplifted eyes embody the young girls feelings of hope.. Head of a Girl Looking Up 337240

The Head of the Virgin in Three-Quarter View Facing Right 1510-13 Leonardo da Vinci Italian Fully revealed in 2005, the verso of this sheet is inscribed with a gray-brown ink ".T." that is quite reminiscent of the "Melzi-Leoni" markings on Leonardos drawings and manuscripts. The study for the head of the Virgin on the recto has sometimes been doubted by scholars 'ex silentio' as being by Leonardo, possibly because its magical beauty renders it suspicious (Walter Vitzthum in 1966 quoted a recent English critics opinion in his support, "the drawing makes one think of Walter Paters mind rather than of Leonardos hand"). However, even in Leonardos most densely pictorial drawings, a few traces of his left-handed parallel hatching often remain visible underneath all the layers of the worked up medium. As the detailed scientific analyses of 2002-2003 demonstrated, this drawing is done with a nearly seamless sfumato technique, and is extremely homogeneous in its dense use of red and black
