Portrait of a Family Playing Music, 1663. Pieter de Hooch (Dutch, 1629-1684). Oil on canvas; framed: 124.5 x 142.5 x 7 cm (49 x 56 1/8 x 2 3/4 in.); unframed: 98.7 x 116.7 cm (38 7/8 x 45 15/16 in.). The identity of the sitters remains unknown, although the marble floor and mantelpiece, the Transylvanian prayer rug on the table, and the silk clothes all point to the familys considerable wealth. Furthermore, the richly carved chest at the right supports Chinese vases and Japanese lacquered boxes, a reference to the flourishing Dutch trade with Asia. Music making often took place at home, and its appearance here also signifies the harmoniousness of the family.

A Mother Feeding her Child (The Happy Mother) 1707 Holland. Willem van Mieris employed the refined, enamel-like painting technique associated with the artists of Leiden, achieving a surface that shows no obvious traces of the brush. His father, Frans van Mieris, was also a leading practitioner of this manner. Whereas Fransís subjects were often satirical, Willem responded to the fashion for more dignified, classicizing subjects that emerged in the last decades of the 17th century. In this traditional domestic interior, Willem treated the middle-class mother and her children as rather elegant, generalized types. In a Railway Carriage (After a Night's Journey) 1851 Germany. This is a remarkable example of an early work from a pioneering proponent of Realism. Menzel revealed the unglamorous aspect of bourgeois train travel in many compelling details a man asleep in a contorted position, a wistful woman gazing out at early morning light, the detritus of their journey around them. Menzel began to use opaque watercolor (gouache) in 1850, combining it with pastel (and oil) as seen here..
