Tobias Curing His Father's Blindness 1630-35 Bernardo Strozzi Italian The subject of the painting is drawn from the apocryphal Book of Tobit, which tells how the archangel Raphael directed Tobias to cure his fathers blindness with the gall of the fish he had caught. Although born in Genoa, in 1630 Bernardo Strozzi moved to Venice, where this canvas was painted. He repeated the composition at least twice, suggesting that it enjoyed some success. The Tailors Workshop. Tourists visiting the Netherlands during the 17th century marvelled at the many paintings hanging in the homes of even the humblest of craftsmen. Quiringh van Brekelenkam here depicts the shop of a tailor, who is at work with two apprentices seated on a kind of raised platform. Hanging above them is a contemporary river landscape in a black frame.

Frans Hals the Elder was a Dutch Golden Age painter, chiefly of individual and group portraits and of genre works, who lived and worked in Haarlem. Jean Baptiste Greuze (17251805) was a French genre and portrait painter. His works are characterized as sentimental and moralistic. He was praised by Diderot. Among his best known works are Les Deux Soeurs, La Cruche Cassee, and LInnocence tenant deux Pigeons. This painting, titled La Malediction paternelle or The Father's Curse, is in the Louvre and is one of the best known of Greuze's moral pictures. It shows a son deserting his family including his father (pictured with outstretched arms) to join the army. It is one of his worst productions. Observe the theatrical attitudes and gestures, the too carefully arranged draperies, etc., of the actors in this exaggerated scene, which in real life would pass in formless disorder and rough confusion.
