Verelst, 1628 - 1650Jean Baptiste Greuze (17251805) was a French genre and portrait painter. His works are characterized as sentimental and moralistic. He was praised by Diderot. Among his best known works are Les Deux Soeurs, La Malediction paternelle, La Cruche Cassee, and LInnocence tenant deux Pigeons. In this painting, titled 'A Father handing over the Marriage-portion of his Daughter,' then 'The Village Bride,' is the best  of Greuze's subject pictures. The scene is more or less naturally arranged, ad informed with tender homely sentiment inspired by the subjec. The bride, with her fresh young face and modest attitude, is a delicious figure.
