The Pigkillers 1647-1657 Holland. Here Adriaen van Ostade depicted the communal butchering of a pig, a topic alluded to in Rembrandt van Rijnís The Hog. While Van Ostade used a less dramatic and calligraphic line than Rembrandt, the dark tone and concentrated format of the small roundel emphasize the importance of this source of food to the massing villagers. The Adoration of the Shepherds A Night Piece 1652-1662 Holland. Rembrandt was printing mezzotint-like prints before the medium existed. Ludwig von Siegenís invention of mezzotint engraving may even owe something to his encounter with Rembrandtís prints during a pivotal 1642 visit to Amsterdam. Several of Rembrandtís works dating from the 1650sówhen few were familiar with the mezzotint processówere traditionally called ìdark mannerî or ìnight pieces.î In this unusually nocturnal Adoration, tardy shepherds arouse the Holy Family. . A copper plate becomes worn with every impression pulled from it, which affects the subsequent impressions. In this sixth state some sections are lighter, such as the shepherds faces. New lines can be seen behind Mary, and elsewhere, which Rembrandt incised to camouflage worn passages. The fact that he printed copies of this state on costly Japanese paper indicates that they were meant for sale.

The Flood 1829 Edward Calvert British Calvert, the oldest member of the Ancients, was arguably its finest printmaker. His masterful control of line, strong articulation of light and shade, and bold sense of design lend his tiny lithographs surprising power, drawing the viewer into the intricate worlds that they describe. Calvert's approach to lithography was unusual and may have been inspired by Blake's method of relief etching, which combined additive and subtractive processes. After drawing his design on the lithographic stone in tushe, a greasy black ink applied with a pen, Calvert then scratched away passages using a needle, creating fine white lines similar to those found in wood engraving.Here, a man helps a woman walk along a narrow log placed across a raging river towards a man who drives cattle along the bank at right..
